Admiration & Admonishment!

First...Congratulations to Duane D., #201, for winning 1st place in his age group at last week's 10K run in the South Padre/Port Isabel area race. I'm not sure of the correct name for the race, but I do know we are proud of him. Every time I see him race by my front door (as I sit in my recliner) I admire his dedication and discipline.
Way to go, Duane!

One of the things that sets Sandpiper's apart from other parks is our volunteer spirit. We have terrific folks that take on behind-the-scenes, unglamorous jobs that need to be done.
Like Recycling.

Ron & Gloria #43, have done a masterful job getting the whole program organized, with bins placed in the old bathroom of the weight room, in front of the pavilion.

While they are gone, Bill & Karen #403, have stepped forward to run the program. That means AT LEAST two trips to town to the recycling center every week.
The response has been terrific. Many of us are taking the time to gather up recyclable items and drop them off in the appropriate bins.
However...
Some of us are getting a little lazy, or maybe just don't know the guide lines.
To make the volunteers jobs a little less onerous, please, PLEASE take the time to:
Rinse out your containers. This is a biggie! If you don't rinse out the containers..like plastic milk jugs, the smell after a few days will knock your socks off!
Smash down the plastics (#1 & #2's only) and discard the lids.
Fold up the cardboard.
Be aware of what we are recycling and what we aren't.
No glass.
No food cans.
No plastic bags.
Yes to newspapers, magazines.
Yes to #1 & #2 plastics.
Yes to cardboard.
Separate what you are dropping off into the appropriate bins...every bin is labeled. Some people have gotten a little lazy and just drop off bags of items, dripping with orange juice, expecting the volunteers to clean and sort. Good that you are recycling! But Bad to expect the volunteers to clean it and organize it!
We continue to ask for CRUSHED soda cans.
The proceeds from the aluminum go to Adopt-a-family.
If anyone would like to help out Karen & Bill...for instance do the run to the recycling center for a week, they would sure appreciate it.

I think it would be a good idea to put up a gas money donation box in the room somewhere. These folks are doing all this on their dime and that isn't right, is it?

Just a suggestion.
