Tuesday Motorcycle Ride

Nine brave Sandpips brave the 90 degree and windy weather for a ride to Los Fresnos and lunch at Julia's.

SandPaper #4

Here is the last issue of the underground newspaper.
Look back and enjoy!

June 23, 2007
This is the last issue before Jim & I head off in search of cooler weather. When we return in mid August I'll update with the latest news.

Construction is moving at a mind-boggling rate. I fully expect renters in the motel units when we return...well, maybe a slight exaggeration, but not by much I bet! The motel unit is two stories, two units up and two down, each with a living room, kitchen, bath and large bedroom. Very nice, quality work. The community room is going to surprise a lot of people. Huge kitchen with tons of counter space, lots of table room, two restrooms-no showers, a separate library/computer area, and six washer/dryer stations in the laundry. Wide doors lead out to a nice sized covered patio with tables and chairs. The landscaping that is planned for the area perhaps will include a water feature, lots of tropicals...it should be absolutely charming.

The plans for the north fence have wobbled back and forth for awhile due to problems such as permits, etc...but now it looks like mobiles are the way to go for that stretch.

The 600 row is completed, and landscaped with tropical fruit trees making it a veritable Garden of Eat'en...sorry, that was bad.

Jim and I, with huge help from Anne(Bill) and Sherry(Tony), planted berms at several road corners with flowering perennials. They look so good that more are popping up all over the park. Until they get planted they look like Indian burial mounds.

Sue and John P. have sent back water volleyball ideas from White Thorn in Va. that we may try to implement...like having several balls stored near the server, so when a ball goes far out of bounds, instead of retrieving it right away, play will continue. So simple...duh!

In town road work continues on McColl,
University(Hwy 106)is also all torn up.
After a very long dry spell we are finally getting a few days of good soaking rain.

Few people left in the park, and more drifting away every week. I must say tho, that we all are really looking forward to the upcoming season.

Til next time,
Sue Z

SandPaper #3

The third installment...are you enjoying reading these?
  I sure am!
**************
June 14, 2007
Things are hopping here at Sandpipers. Everyday brings a new work crew or project online. There is a long trench dug by the north fence where electricians have been working all week to bring the electrical connections up to code. Can casitas be far behind?

The tennis courts are in the middle of a complete overhaul. All the messy Mesquite trees are gone and the surface has been patched. The tennis court lights are burning late into the night as crews apply the new surface coatings.

The 600 row resembles an ant colony with workers scurrying everywhere. Today (May 24th) there are 25 trucks expected thru the gate! Loads of caliche are being carried by huge earth movers who have a little trouble negotiating the turns. In fact, Jim and I were talking with Karen at 7am up by the gate as the first few trucks came in. Good by sago palm near the mailboxes! Almost good by mailboxes! Karen jumped on her bike and tore after the driver. I wouldn't have wanted to be in his shoes! That whole row should be finished soon, with landscaping plans already being finalized.

Bids are out for more of the big construction jobs, and the way Karen and Jay are working, they should be started soon.

Traveler news: Aloha! Bill & Sandy, Bob & Sue are off to Hawaii for a couple of weeks. Tom & Ellen are to be Corps of Eng. camp hosts up on the Columbia river in Washington this summer. Bob & Bev are being snowed on in Colorado. And here's something really worth noting! You all know Dave & Sandy Junkin are avid birders. David is a licensed bird bander. He caught a previously unknown bird in his backyard net last summer. It caused quite a lot of excitement in the birding community, with extraordinary attempts to identify the bird. Take a look at the this! Junkin's Warbler...

He has a bird named after him!! The article is from the spring 2007 issue of Living Bird magazine. Right now they are up in Adak, Alaska...brrr!

Still playing two teams of volleyball, but it's getting thin. 15 players yesterday. And a real crowd showed up for petanque...3 hardcore players!

Still have plenty of copies of 'Air, the Musical'. Send $5 (or 4$ pick-up) to lot 38 here at Sandpipers and we'll mail you a dvd. It will help fund next years production.

More as it happens...

Walk Talk and Shop

Walk Talk and Shop
Junk & Java has changed its name to Walk, Talk, and Shop. This will be a park wide sale on the first Saturday of the month from 8 am until 11.  The first park wide Walk, Talk, and Shop, is this Saturday, November 2.  The park has a few tables available for borrowing, but you must contact the office to borrow one. Set up your tables and get rid of your unwanted and unused “stuff” or the crafts you’ve completed over the summer.
Coffee will be served in flip flopz beginning at 8 am. Stop by for coffee then begin your Walk, Talk and Shop.

Puss Caterpillar

Puss Caterpillar or Asp.
 Please read about these caterpillars.
They do not turn in to butterflies!

Yesterday Bob B. found one on top of their house air conditioner, today Bob found one walking across the road in front of Jackz.

Just touching them or having them fall on you from a tree can be nasty.
Ask Alma, her whole arm was in pain. Lou froze some.

Thanks to Miss Vicki for bringing them to our attention!

Sandpaper Vol 2.

As promised, the second issue of the underground newspaper....

Sandpaper Vol 2.
May 21, 2007
Jay and Karen are here for awhile overseeing
the beginning of an intensive building period.
The sod has been scraped and dirt dumped
into massive piles for the new 600 row.

And the go ahead has been given
for building casitas along the north fence.
No time table on those yet tho.
The palm trees around the pool have been trimmed
and a local work crew has been working on cleaning pool furniture. No more volunteer scrubbers.

Construction will be starting soon on the community room,
with nifty plans for an outdoor patio/hot tub area.
The tennis courts have a crew working
on them right now, filling cracks and painting.

The large messy Mesquite tree by
the front entrance to the tennis courts is gone...more sun, less mess.

A huge group will be celebrating Mother's Day with brunch at the Echo hotel tomorrow. I think the park will be empty!

We STILL have between 25 and 30 fanatics showing up to play water volleyball.

More news as it occurs.

SandPiper SandPaper, Vol 1

A real trip down memory lane.
I am revisiting the first of the unofficial underground newspaper I started way back when we were young(er) and enthusiastic.
This is from, gee, 2007!
Enjoy the nostalgia.

I am going to reprise my 'underground newspaper' role, and send out Sandpiper updates thru the summer to all the 'goners'. Marilyn does an adequate job but she doesn't report the gossip...so I will. If you do not want these random updates just email me and I will remove you from the list. If you hear of someone who wants on, also let me know.

This is the 1st issue of the underground newspaper but it's from last month so it's a little out of date. issue 2 will follow right now. Sue Z

The SandPaper, Rough and Unrefined News

Sue Zee Seyz:

We are STILL fielding 4 teams for volleyball, 4 huge teams! People just won't go home. The weather has been delightful, but you know that will change. Everybody is getting short haircuts in preparation for sweaty necks.

Sue P. and Jim Z. have been working like dogs to produce a good dvd from the recordings made at 'Air', the musical. They have a finished product now...Sue has done an amazing job...and are cranking out copies as fast as they can. We will mail one to you for $5.00, $4.00 if we hand it to you. That covers the cost of production and mailing, with a little left over to put towards next years big extravaganza, which Garland is working on right now!

Preparation for further construction has begun by cutting down the trees between the new office and the pavilion. Except for a few tall palms, all are gone. I understand the hot tub will be moved to that area. And, the big trees to the north of the petanque courts are gone, and a few near the horseshoe pits...probably gonna move the shuffleboard there. They do have a grand plan, so we'll just have
to wait and see. Also, the first rental trailer near the front gate is gone. We should see the rental units started soon.

Cath & Dr. B, Tommy & Terry, Yves & Andre' will be attending 1st annual outlaw national championship chuckwagon and quarter horse races...Monday, May 21st - Monday, May 28th...go online to check it out, should be a blast! Bob, Cath, & Yves will be in the Pony Express Team Paintball Racing! Do you ride? http://riverranchraces.com/

There are rumors in the valley that Costco is interested in building here. Wouldn't that be nice! Also, McAllen just passed a NO SMOKING law for ALL restaraunts and bars, and public places. WooHoo!

I'll put up the next one tomorrow.

K-Nude Info

   K-NUDE

92.1 FM

Sandpipers Resort Radio

Contact: Steve Jacobson                                              For immediate release

Telephone: 956-587-2640

Address: Lot 42

Improvements & Upgrade to K-NUDE

During the summer, K-NUDE, Sandpipers Resort Radio at 92.1FM, made substantial improvements to the music selection, equipment, and capabilities, making K-NUDE more relevant to the residents and guests of the resort.

In the music lineup, K-NUDE added over 500 new songs to the already extensive selection of music. K-NUDE continues to broadcast a special mix of oldies, classic rock, as well as classic and contemporary country songs.

To assist listeners during weather emergencies, K-NUDE installed the NOAA Weather emergency service. Any time a weather emergency or alert is issued, K-NUDE will break in and broadcast information direct from the NOAA Weather Service. Thus assuring listeners the latest and up to the minute weather information

To make sure K-NUDE is available anytime, but especially during power outages, K-NUDE installed a UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply). This will allow K-NUDE to remain on the air even if the resort loses power. Since K-NUDE can now stay on the air even during power outages, listeners are urged to have a battery powered FM radio to stay informed especially during an emergency.

K-NUDE also will make resort news available as soon as it’s received. This will keep the residents and guests informed on what's happening and about any changes that were made to the resort schedule of events.

K-NUDE is always striving to improve communication at Sandpipers and welcomes any comments or suggestions on further improvements or programming. Address all Emails to knudetx@gmail.com or drop by the studio at Lot 42. You can always stop Steve when you see him and discuss the station.

Adopt a Family 2013-2014

Another year - another season will soon be upon us.
John and I will be meeting with our
elementary school contacts shortly.

They will provide us with a list of families
who require assistance.
We will meet with these families
in order to determine their needs, the number and
ages of the children and any special requirements.

In order to finance this worthy project
we will be having our regular soup
nights starting with the second Tuesday of November
and continuing in
December, January, February and March.
Two kinds of soup, bread, crackers
and dessert will be provided.
The cost is $5.00 per person payable at the
door.
BYOB.

We are seeking volunteers to make soup and desserts.
Please contact Mary at Lot 5 or email her at mbmre_17@yahoo.com with your questions and offers.

The monies generated from this event with help us
in purchasing perishable food to be delivered
at Christmas time along with donations of
non-perishable food, clothes
and other necessities for these families.

We will also need helpers to shop for each child
 and to assist in delivering
these items on the Saturday before Christmas.

Soup night does not provide sufficient funds
to cover the costs to provide
everything we need to purchase.
So, like last year we will be holding an auction.

This auction will be held on
Sunday March 2, 2014 at 2:30pm in the pavilion.

We are looking for items "from the heart".
Items such as dinners, car wash,
pet wash, homemade pies, pickles, knitted items,
in other words something personal.

So mark your calendars:

Soup night:
November 12, 2013 at 5:30pm at Flip Flopz
December 10, 2013 at 5:30pm at Flip Flopz
January 14, 2014 at 5:30pm at Flip Flopz
February 11, 2014 at 5:30pm at Flip Flopz
March 11, 2014 at 5:30pm at Flip Flopz

Adopt a Family From the heart auction:
Sunday March 2, 2014 at 2:30pm
at the Pavilion.
