Lyrics from Carolyn

I heard someone was looking for the lyrics to the "Resort Sandpipers" that Lou and Elma sang for the Gong Show.

Here they are, if you would like to post them:
**************************888

On the dark Texas highway, cold beer in my hand
Loud gunshots ringing, rising up through the air
Up ahead are the shanties, graffiti and all
My heart grew weary and my sight grew dim
I almost stopped out of fright!
Maria stood in the driveway
I heard the Petanque bell
And I was thinking to myself,
“This could be Progresso, but what the hell!”
Then Jay lit up his goftcart and he showed me the way
There were voices down the 400 row,
I thought I heard them say...

“Welcome to the Resort Sandpipers
Such a party place (Such a crazy place)
Such a happy place
Plenty of drinking at the Resort Sandpipers
Any time of day (Any time of year)
You can find it here.”

Richie is definitely twisted, he's got too many hats
There's Bobs, Bills, Johns and Jims, all called friends
Roy's music plays in Pizzazz, after sunset.
Some come to remember, but good luck with that!

Randy called up his Captain,
Sue, "bring me my wine"
She said, "We haven't had that spirit here since yesterday morning at nine"
And still those voices are calling from far away,
Wake you up in the middle of your nap
Just to hear them say...

“Welcome to the Resort Sandpipers
Such a party place (Such a crazy place)
Such a happy place
We're livin' it up at the Resort Sandpipers
What a nice find (what a nice find)
Leave your clothes behind.”

People on the ball courts,
The burgers ready to grill
And we play nude Olympics here, of our own free will
And at the super happy hour,
They gathered for the feast
They come with plastic forks and knives
But they must get in line 'first'!

Last thing I remember, Charlie
was behind the bar
I had too many tequila shots
Forgot the place I was before
"Goodnight” said Mrs. Calabash
"We are programmed to receive.
You can check-out any time you like,
But you won't want to leave! "

Take care,
Carolyn

Rio Grande Valley Bicycle Riders-From Tom B.

Rio Grande Valley Bicycle Riders - ALERT!

As many of you know, Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge was a popular bicycle ride for  many years.  In the last six or seven years, bicycles have been excluded from Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge.  I have tried repeatedly to get this policy changed.  Recently I met a member of the staff, Alexa, and raised the issue with her.  Alexa said that there was to be a staff meeting the following week and she would bring it up at that meeting.

I just received a message from Alexa that reported that bicycling at Santa Ana is up for reconsideration and that a public comment period is currently open.  The deadline for comments is February 16, 2018 so we don't have long to get these comments submitted.  Comments can be submitted via e-mail or written and mailed in a letter.

The link to the solicitation for comments is:  https://www.fws.gov/refuge/santa_ana/draftcds.html

Now here is the strange part.  There are seven policies up for review, the first one on the list is Bicycling and Scientific Research at Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge.  I have read that part of the set of documents and can not find a single word in the document related to bicycling.  The word bicycle is never mentioned in the document.  I am puzzled by this as the remaining documents in the listing all mention the topic under consideration multiple times.

I don't know if this is good, they are trying to get bicycling approved under the same authorization as Scientific Research, hoping that the key person or persons won't notice this omission.  Or is it bad because nothing in the document specifically mentions bicycling (beyond the title).  Either way, I plan to submit my comments and hope the you will follow suit.  Also, please pass along to any others you know who may be interested in changing the present policy at Santa Ana which excludes bicycles from the refuge.

A few points to mention:

Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge Allows bicycling on any of the roads in the park including the scenic loop which is closed to automobile traffic but has a tram, just as Santa Ana has a tram.

Both Laguna Atascosa and Santa Ana National Wildlife Areas are under the same management entity, the Lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuges.  Why should the policy of one allow and the other exclude bicycles?

Bicycling is a popular activity in any community.  Young people are particularly enthusiastic about bicycle riding.  Families with young children would benefit from a policy allowing bicycle riding in the refuge.  Among the Winter Texan community in the Rio Grande Valley many people bring bicycles to the area and many Winter Texan groups have organized rides.  Allowing bicycle riding in the refuge will substantially increase the public participation at the refuge as well as public support for the mission of the refuge.

For many years our bicycle ride group bicycled safely and without conflict with the tram operations or with wildlife in the park.  If there were conflicts caused by other groups, we are unaware of that and we support the enforcement of all the National Wildlife Refuge rules and regulations.  Action should be taken against any group that causes a problem by violating the refuge rules.  Such action should be directed at the offending group, not in a general policy which excludes all similar groups.

Bicycle riding produces no air pollution, no noise pollution other than people talking (an activity of any other group in the park including the loudspeaker in the tram).  Wildlife may be mildly disturbed by the occasional bicycle passing but we have never seen a physical conflict between a bicycle and wildlife.

We support bicycles being limited to use of established roadways within the park.  We do not support and are not requesting bicycles on foot trails or on limited access roads (off road or trail bicycling).

Bicycling is good exercise.  Bicycling in a natural setting is very peaceful, enjoyable and refreshing.

Exposing more people to the joys of being in a natural setting should be one of the goals of the National Wildlife Refuge system.

Thank you for taking the time to consider this request, submitting your comments to Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge and for passing the request on to other bicycle riders.

Rescheduled Bicycle Ride

Come join us for a bicycle ride on Tuesday, January 23!

Tuesday, January 23 is the make-up day for the bicycle ride that was scheduled for January 15.

We will assemble at the gate prior to departure at 9:00 a.m.  Our ride this week will be the Mission Bike Trail.  The weather forecast calls for partly cloudy skies and an early morning temperature near 50 degrees.  The forecast high for the day is about 68 degrees so it will be a cool ride. Dress in layers as the day warms and our activity provides additional warmth, you may want to shed a coat or sweatshirt to stay comfortable.  Winds are forecast to be 10 to 15 miles per hour out of the north.

The Mission Bike Trail is a rolling trail, a few moderate hills to climb along the route.  We ride a minimum of three miles at a leisurely pace and if the group is feeling up to it
we can add an additional three miles to the trip,
the additional three miles are very flat.

Following the bike ride we will have lunch at McAllisters Deli.  Lunch is optional, you may depart on your own at any time.
The return to the park is on your own so you can plan to do shopping or errands on your way home.

Bicycle rides are led by Tom & Louise Butler, Lot 44

How its going to work:

The initial buy in will be $5.00 which will give you a total of 50 Chips. Your hand will be stamped showing that you have paid your initial $5.00 buy in. You will also be given one ticket on your initial buy in. All the money from the initial buy in will be put aside for the large 50/50 draw at the end of the night.

Every $1.00 you buy after the initial buy in will give you 10 chips. For every dollar you spend you will receive a different ticket from the initial buy in ticket. Every time this second pot reaches $100.00 there will be a 50/50 draw. This could end up happening two or three times during the evening. This is a separate pot from your initial buy in of $5.00 This could end up happening two or three times during the evening. This is a separate pot from your initial buy in of $5.00.

Limits Min 1 Max 10
Payout Various

Limits Min 1 Max 10

5 Chips to play 10:1 payout

one ticket on your initial buy in.

Lastly, when you cash in your chips (winnings) you will be given a third color ticket. 2 tickets for every

10 chips you cash in. We will use the round up method to ensure all your chips count, meaning if you cash in 1

chip you would receive 2 tickets, if you cash in 12 tickets you would receive 4 tickets.

Once your chips are cashed in and you are given your tickets, there will be 4 buckets for you to place

your tickets in.
Bucket # 1 will be a $10.00 Cash Card and will cost you 1 ticket to enter. (you may put in as many

tickets as you want)

Bucket # 2 will be a $25.00 Cash Card and will cost you 3 tickets to enter. (You may enter as many

times as you wish, but each entry will cost 3 tickets)

Bucket # 3 will be a $50.00 Cash Card and will cost you 5 tickets to enter. (You may enter as many

times as you wish, but each entry will cost 5 tickets)

Bucket # 4 will be a $100.00 Cash Card and will cost you 10 tickets to enter (You may enter as many

times as you wish, but each entry will cost 10 tickets)

You can enter tickets into as many buckets as you wish, as long as you have the required number of tickets for

that bucket.

These draws will take place at the end of the night at approximately 9:45pm.

Therefore, you will have many chances to win during the course of the evening.
Example:

Your initial buy in of $5.00 gives you 50 chips to play plus the chance to win the large 50/50 prize at the end of

the evening. You purchase an additional $1.00 during the evening giving you 10 more chips to play plus 1

ticket which gives you access to the continuous 50/50 draw every time the pot reaches $100.00. Your ticket

stays in the pot all night. At the end of the night you have a total of 20 chips that you have won and cashed in.

This will give you a total of 4 tickets (2 tickets for every 10 chips) to enter in the cash draw buckets. In this case

you could enter 3 tickets for $25.00 and 1 ticket for the $10 draw.
Your chance of winning for the night in this example:
1 Chance for the large 50/50 draw at the end of the night

Multiply chances for the continuous 50/50 draws throughout the night

3 Chances to win $25.00, and

1 Chance to win $10.00.

This is pretty good for a total of a $6.00 investment for the night as given in the example above. Of course the more you buy in and the more you win, provide an even higher chance to winning Big

Please feel free to contact me at anytime if there are questions.  steve.julie1202@gmail.com

Thank you for posting this to the Sandpipers members.  If there is a way to get a rough feeling of how many may show up that would be great.  If not possible, that's fine as well.

We look forward to sharing a fun evening with you!
