A Sick Computer

Hello everyone.  If any one in the park has an old desktop computer they have stored in a closet or are not using and will eventually end up in Angles wagon, please let Gary and Lizette know.  Their desktop computer quit working and I think it needs a new power supply.  So if they can find an old desktop, then I can change out the power supply and see if that takes care of the problem.
  Thanks for your help.

A Heartfelt Thank You!

From George and Pauline:

When caught by an unexpected storm,
one of the most beautiful sights is
that of a ray of sunshine breaking through the clouds.
That ray, in this instance, was and is the physical, emotional, and mental deeds so lovingly extended to George and Pauline as he was and is caught by an unexpected assault to his heart.

The staff at Renaissance Hospital
expediently and efficiently reopened one completely blocked heart artery and now we have chosen to go back home to have  another majorly blocked artery attended to.

We value your  support and love given.
Thank you.

Tilley Alert! Help!

The mystery has been solved!  Steve (of Steve and Cher) brought Bob's hat to him today.  He said Doc had told him and Cher that he had "rescued" the hat and asked if it belonged to them. They said that it didn't but that they knew to whom it did belong.  Thank you, Sue, for helping us get the word out about the missing hat that is now safely back home!

From Pam P.
HELP – MISSING
Sunday night at about 7:30 pm, my dear husband
took a shower in the bath house.
No, he’s not missing.
 But his hat is.

He inadvertently left it in the bath house. Steve and Cher noticed it when they left the bath house shortly after he did. However, when Bob went back to get it at about 8 AM Monday morning, the hat was nowhere to be seen. Sammi had not seen it when she cleaned the bath house this morning and it was not in the office lost and found.

This is a brand new (arrived Friday) white Tilley hat.
If you found it in the bath house and took it for safe-keeping until the owner could be located, here’s your chance to get it back to its rightful home. You can contact us at 336-749-9870 and we’ll come and get it, leave the hat in the office, leave the hat on the porch of #122, or bring it by our coach at #229.
Please help us locate the missing hat. Bob’s poor bald head needs it…in case these rainy days give way to sunshine.

Spring Bike Rides, 2015

March 3, 2015 – Port Isabel - Convoy with group leaving the gate at 9:00 a.m. or meet at the parking lot northeast of the Lighthouse at 10:30 a.m.  We'll ride through some of the residential areas of town.  Port Isabel has some very interesting older homes and newer homes.  We also will see the shrimping fleet and an interesting side swing draw bridge.  We’ll have lunch at Dirty Al’s Seafood.  Stay after the ride and tour the lighthouse, visit the sea life museum, history museum, marine museum or take a dolphin cruise.
There is plenty to do in Port Isabel or on South Padre Island.

March 10, 2015 – Edinburg Wetlands WBC - The Edinburg City Park and World Birding Center is just a short drive from the park.  The park and adjacent lakes are popular picnic sites for the locals but are usually empty on our weekday visits.  We will ride the paved bicycle/walking/fitness track around the park.  Following that we will enter the World Birding Center.  This has been an excellent area for viewing a variety of birds.  Join us for lunch at the Willie B’s BBQ Restaurant following the ride.

March 17, 2015 – Laguna Atascosa - Northwest of Port Isabel is an inland lake known as Laguna Atascosa.  The National Wildlife Refuge extends from the lake to the sea shore on Laguna Madre.  The area is rich in birds, deer, nilgai, ocelots and alligators.  There is an admission charge for each vehicle, $5.  A short drive from the headquarters takes us to the loop drive.  The eleven mile loop goes along the coast and then returns inland.  Along the way is an overlook on the interior and shore where we will have lunch.  The ride is on paved road and is nearly level.  The biggest challenge to riders is the distance.  Pack a sack lunch and drinks!  We’ll picnic at a viewpoint on the loop drive.  Bring sunscreen, insect repellant, binoculars, bird guide, camera, water, and lunch!

March 24, 2015 –Nude Olympics – No Bike Ride

March 31, 2015 – South Padre Island - This bike ride will be a little different than our normal ride.  Due to the distance (about 80 miles) to South Padre Island (SPI) not everyone will convoy to the SPI Convention Centre.  If you wish to convoy, meet at the Sandpipers gate at 9:00 a.m.  We will plan to arrive at the Convention Centre (at the north end of the SPI developed area) about 10:30 a.m.  We will leave the cars there then bike south along the Gulf coast to the southern tip of SPI to visit Isla Blanca Park.  From there we will return north along the Laguna Madre coast to the SPI Convention Centre.  This ride is about a 12 mile round trip.  We will eat lunch at Dirty Al’s Restaurant on the way back to convention center.  Be sure you have a bicycle lock for our lunch stop.  Bring:  camera, binoculars, water, sun screen and insect repellant.

April 7, 2015 – La Lomita & Anzulduas Park and Dam - South of Mission lies the last irrigation lake on the Rio Grande River.  Anzulduas Dam and its accompanying park provide views of the Rio Grande River as well as a view of the dam.  There are some birds in the park, bring your binoculars.  We park at the La Lomita Chapel, the last remaining building of the Spanish Mission that gave the city of Mission its name.  From there we ride to Anzulduas Park then return to the cars at La Lomita.  The total ride is less than 6 miles.  There are some hills as we climb levees, the remainder of the ride on public roads that are mostly level.  We’ll drive a short distance to the Riverside Club for lunch.  Bring binoculars, bird guide, camera, water, sunscreen and insect repellant.

April 14, 2015 – Mission Bike Trail - This ride is on a paved trail with a few hills.  Much of the trail parallels an irrigation canal.  A few miles are on a small quiet road to the NABA Butterfly Center.  If weather permits we’ll make a stop at the North American Butterfly Association Butterfly Center.  The butterfly center has undergone significant development since our last visit.  Bring a camera, water, sunscreen and insect repellant.  The total ride will be about 8 miles.  Following the ride we’ll have lunch at McAlisters Deli.  This ride marks the end of the spring bike ride season at Sandpipers Resort.  See you next year!

New Book in our Library!

Our resident bird-watchers extraordinaire, Sandy & Dave, are donating this book to the Sandpiper library.

Written in a humorous style by their friend Olaf Danilson it is about bird watching from a nudist's perspective.
Sandy & Dave are even mentioned by name, and an un-named resident of Avatar who just happens to give massages, traded a massage for this book.

Mr. Danielson has bird-watched here at Sandpipers, at Natures, throughout the Valley and at different Naturist Clubs around the country.

Thanks Sandy & Dave...looks like a must read!

Pioneer & Ranching Crafts Day

The Museum of South Texas History invites the community to celebrate South Texas pioneer and ranching heritage at a highly interactive and entertaining special event. "Find Your Pioneering Spirit" is the theme for this year's Pioneer & Ranching Crafts Day, to be held from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Feb. 21. This family-friendly indoor and outdoor festival features artisans providing authentic craft demonstrations, hands-on activities, live music, folkloric dance performances, costumed historical reenactors, a studio camera photo booth to capture the moment and vendors selling foods, beverages and handcrafted goods. In celebration of the 25th anniversary of this favorite event, there will be many new activities - and beloved traditions - to help visitors of all ages find their inner pioneer!

This year's theme is represented by the image of a chuck wagon, an iconic symbol for this time period. "Chuck" comes from an old western term for food. When the trail cook yelled "Chuck!" hungry vaqueros came a runnin'. The cook's kingdom was a rolling kitchen, sometimes called a camp wagon, but better known as a chuck wagon. Visitors will be able to see a 1910 John Deere Wagon in action as "Cookies" (owners Charles and Janice Ellis) cook dishes for sampling that will include beans, sourdough biscuits and peach cobbler. Cowboys and cowgirls will learn about chuck wagon history and hear some cowboy poetry.

Other interactive activities will include flintknapping, Native American tipi storytelling, butter churning, coffee grinding, wood carving and a variety of handwork such as cro-hooking, felting, cross-stitching, quilting and a rug making technique called Pleache't. Take a walk in our Will Looney Legacy Park and build a Cerca de Leña, try out roping, trick roping, print making with artist and Texas A&M University Assistant Professor of Art Jesus De La Rosa or play a game of GIANT checkers! Visitors can enhance their pioneer look with face painting or tattoos - glitter, that is! Be sure to catch the electrifying performance by Africanized bees expert Luis Slayton at 1 p.m. when he steps into a plexiglass case with a swarm of Africanized killer bees to demonstrate his "beard of bees."

Visitors will also be treated to traditional cowboy poetry and music by event favorite and award-winning cowboy Pipp Gillette. Gillette keeps the tradition of cowboy music alive through his songs and poetry, giving momentum to the recent revitalization of cowboy music and poetry. Watch him perform at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., and be sure to take advantage of a meet and greet with Gillette to be held at 2:30 p.m. in the Museum Store. In addition to music and poetry performances by a true cowboy, visitors will be able to experience live music provided by Edinburg North High School's (ENHS) Mariachi Oro and folkloric dance performances by Conceptos Entidad Dancística, Edinburg Folklórico, Grupo Folklórico RGV, Las Palmas Community Center Ballet Folklórico and Los Fresnos High School Grupo Folklórico.

It wouldn't be a festival without delicious foods and refreshing beverages. Stop by the rows of aromatic booths and choose from items such as charro beans, chili, pan de elote, fajitas, chalupas, apple pie, raspas, aguas frescas and nieve Mexicana. And, be sure to visit the Tijerina Family Cooking Team's Pan de Campo Tradition booth on the Gran Paseo!

Admission to Pioneer & Ranching Crafts Day 2015 is the regular admission price, passes excluded: $7 adults (ages 18+); $5 seniors with ID (ages 62+), students with ID (ages 13+); $4 children ages 4 to 12; free, children ages 3 and under. FRIENDS of the museum are admitted free as a benefit of FRIENDship. The museum is located in downtown Edinburg at 200 North Closner Boulevard on the Hidalgo County Courthouse square.
