Sandpiper Walkers & Runners Race Info

Attention Sandpipers

Walkers and Runners:

As in past years many races are scheduled

to be held during the next several

months in the Rio Grand Valley.

Many Sandpipers walkers and runners

 participate in these activities because

they know it is very good for their health.

These races also provide social interaction.

Participants have been quite successful

 in winning trophies and medals in their age groups.

Here is a partial list of scheduled races:

South Padre Island Causeway Run

(the ONLY way to run/walk the bridge this year)

When: January 14, 2012



Where: South Padre Island



Time: 7:00 am- 12:00pm



Why: Get in shape



The walk is a 3 mile walk over the causeway

starting out in the town of Port Isabel.

The cost for each participant is $10.00.



Each participant will receive a t-shirt.



We can park on the island and take the shuttle

over to the starting area in Port Isabel.



I strongly recommend that we get there early, early, early!

There are only so many shuttles available.

Nancy will not be here the first week of January.

She had asked me to fill in for her.

Our annual trip to visit

The Christmas House

will be Thursday, January 5th. 2012 in Falfurrias.

We will be leaving the gate at 10:00 a.m.

Have lunch at Strickland's on Hwy 281 in Falfurrias.

Travel about 2 more miles to

The Christmas House

 for our 1:00 p.m. appointed tour of the house.

This tour is opened to one and all.

Cost:

Your lunch at Stricklands......very reasonable

Tour of the house is $8.00 per person.

If you have never been, this is truly a feast for the eyes

 as well as for the spirit.

You will be entertained by the 3 Minten sisters.

Shop at their Christmas Store with a senior citizen discount.

Consider going but be prepared for a long day.

I will be taking a count of all that are interested

 and then I need to call

 to let them know how many will be attending,

Junque and Java

Activities will once again have a table at this month's

 Junque and Java

to help raise money for the Activities Fund.

If you have some junque (err, treasures)

you would like to donate to the cause,

please drop them off at Lot 25 (Sharon and Mike's)

 or you can bring them early (by 8:00 AM)

 to the pavilion on Saturday, Jan 7th.

Assorted Stuff...Theater & Directory

Wednesday morning at 10:00, a group interested

in forming a community theatre group will be meeting in JAKZ.

 This group, led by B, will be planning a one-act play performance

for later in the season. No singing or dancing required for this production.

Come check it out.

B is issuing an invitation to all interested to the casting call for community theater on Wed.

 No singing involved. See you at 10 AM!

SnowBall Festival Report

If you missed Saturday's celebration of Christmas

 you missed a unique experience.

Here are a few of the highlights.

Santa Mrs Santa and all the elves gathered early to transform the pavilion into a Winter Wonderland .

Snow ball fights, skiing, building snowmen, and gingerbread houses(some just nibbled on the houses).

 We sang, we danced to holiday tunes and watched

 how the grinch stole Christmas.

Prizes were won for all the events.

 We had rich libations and sweets.

I appreciate all those who helped they did a fantastic job.

 I also thank those who came and enjoyed,

 and those who decorated the park.

 I drive through and feel the warmth of the Christmas season.

 Thank you and Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

AND...

At the end of the evening, if you have a gift you aren't thrilled with, a gift that just isn't you, there will be a last chance gift exchange among the unhappies.

3. For Caroalong we need a list of those folks who would like the carolers to visit their home.

Hi Y'all!!

My prescription glasses have inadvertently found a new home!

 I left them in the shower on Sunday 12/4/11 after tennis,

 came back a while later and they were Kaput!

They're plain gold frames with bifocals.

I'd love to be reunited!

 One last note – Joan #338 – left a decorative jelly jar with quarters in the laundry room last week.
This jar has sentimental value to Joan and she.

Cirque Du Soleil is coming to the state farm arena in Feb. with a repeat preformance of Allegria, March 14 -18.

Alegría is a mood, a state of mind.

The themes of the show, whose name

 means "jubilation" in Spanish, are many.

 Power and the handing down of power over time,

the evolution from ancient monarchies to modern democracies,

 old age, youth -

it is against this backdrop that the

characters of Alegría play out their lives.

Kings' fools, minstrels, beggars, old aristocrats and children

make up its universe, along with the clowns,

who alone are able to resist the passing of time and the social transformations that accompany it.

Can feuding divorce lawyers fall in love? Daniel Rafferty (Pierce Brosnan) and Audrey Woods (Julianne Moore) find themselves competing in a divorce case. The at-odds couple is fighting over a spectacular castle home in Ireland and their lawyers are forced to visit the estate together to determine its worth and come to an agreement as to who should receive the home in the settlement. They land in Ireland during one of the year's most romantic festivals and, after a night of platonic drinking, wake up to find themselves married. When they return to the States, they must "act" married in order to maintain their lucrative reputations. Will their pretend nuptial act turn into a real life happily ever after?

The Ladies Who Lunch had quite an outing this past Thursday.

We then all ran over to UTPA for a FREE King Tut exhibit.

Never saw so much gold...

gorgeous jewelry that wouldn't have been out of place wearing to Corina's for lunch. 

Put me in the mood to shop....

 This dagger is solid gold! 

Or would have been if it was real.

  I was all excited about being surrounded by precious jewels and pounds of gold until Karon reminded me it was all a facsimile...really well done, though.

 Now this is kinda cute...these are King Tut's shoes.

  His enemies portraits are painted on so when he walks he is "crushing" them!  Rather touching, really.

 Here is Tut as mummy.

 Young man...only about 18 when he died.

 Not much of a Pharaoh.  He didn't really have a chance to be. 

 But the whole world knows his name.

Ohhhh, more jewels! 

 It was just fascinating.  Go see, you won't be sorry.
