Hidalgo Festival of Lights

Wednesday night a large group of us caravaned to Hidalgo for their Christmas Festival of Lights Tour & Dinner, arranged by John P. who stood in line at the convention center last week, beating out a horde of ravenous winter Texans, to score us tickets.
We arrived in Hidalgo, in the sun shine, but ready to face the winter chill we knew was coming after sundown. The dinner portion of the evening was to be served at City Hall. It seemed pretty chaotic with hundreds of seniors already seated at long tables through out the cramped space. We filled in the few remaining chairs on the perimeter of the room but most of us ended up standing for at least an hour and a half, while we watched the seated group finally get served by the high school soccer team. I was already planning my revenge on John.Later I found out the whys and wherefore's...Every night a different youth organization is charged with dinner. They prepare and serve the meal and reap the profits. The soccer boys did an outstanding job. They were friendly, extremely polite and the food was hot and delicious. If the weather had been a bit more cooperative we wouldn't have been jammed into City hall, but would have eaten outside on the portico overlooking the fabulous light display.
John, you may be safe. After dinner we bundled up for a trolley ride trough the very beautifully decorated city of Hidalgo. Our trolley had a tour guide who narrated a brief history of the area and pointed out the gorgeous light displays. It was truly impressive to all of us...and as a group we've seen a few Christmas light displays in our time! Did I mention it was cold?
This house is across the street from City Hall. Every square inch was lighted and decorated in some way. So magnificent Jim & I had to have our picture taken in front of the house.
The house belongs to a Tejano star of some fame, complete with his
show truck and portrait out front.
There were wonderful and imaginative light displays everywhere. It was really quite dazzling!

Yes, John, it was a magical night. You did good.

I want a tour of that gorgeous house. And maybe lunch or dinner there. Think they rent it out for second honeymoons?

And you people go to Texas in the winter to get warm???? Love the padded jackets and the wolly hats, glad it wasn't me! We are loving the beach in Cambodia at the moment, warm and sunny everyday! No padded jackets for us...unfortunately we DO have to wear bathing suits!! Not a optional decision here.
Great write up Sue. I love your photos.
