Long Awaited Article is Here!

As many know management of the past, and now Karen, has been battling Gene Diaz over a variety of reasons. Recently he was interviewed by a local reporter, as was Karen, giving their sides of the argument. Here is the article, from South Texas Nation, July-Sept, 2008. It is a free advertising newspaper handout.

Nudist Vietnam Veteran Gene Diaz's preference for wearing his birthday suit 365 days a year at Edinburg's Sandpiper nudist resort is being threatened. Gene, a Mexican-American, is in the minority of nudists with skin that's darker than white at Sandpipers. In fact, he's the only Hispanic male who lives there, one of three Hispanic's in the club's 300 or so members.

Gene has sued Sandpipers before for racial discrimination, and secured the right to remain a resident. But management's attempts to evict him continue. Sandpipers' new owner, Karen Willis, says that race isn't a factor in her attempts to evict him. Gene refuses to adhere to new rules meant to improve the park's cosmetic appearances and safety, she said.

"I'm in the process of cleaning up a 20-year-old-park from levels that were not right." Willis explained in an interview with South Texas Nation.

"People are cleaning up their units, removing garbage...but as soon as I say something (to Gene), he says I am picking on him because he is Hispanic...He's just one of those people who doesn't get along. There's always someone who doesn't fit in, for some reason.

His Own Private Idaho

It's not simply Gene's skin color that sets him apart at Sandpiper. Most residents sport dream RV's, sprawling testaments to America's big highway days, driven often by retired nudists who span the country visiting nudist RV parks in cross country nudist vacations. Other trailers seem almost permanent, like miniature model homes with picket fences and paved driveways...small shrubs groomed tidily along walkways.

Gene's lot is a peasant's abode by comparison. His space, about 15 yards wide and long, is dense with vegetation...orange trees, fig, avocado, and other fruit bearing trees that help keep Gene fed and alive. And the shade from his trees is essential. On a fixed U.S. Veteran's disability check of about $600 a month, Gene guards his pennies. His trailer has no air conditioning. He's rather sweat it out in the Rio Grande Valley's hot summers, consoled by the shade of his fruit trees, than pay the price for an electrically-cooled dwelling, he said.

He spends most of his time on a rustic porch, painted brightly like barrio homes.

His trailer is painted, too...pink, yellow and green. It used to be the color of the Mexican flag but Gene was required to re-paint the trailer as part of an earlier settlement that allowed him to remain at Sandpiper. There is a broken down motorcycle on Gene's porch. A tenuous shelf balancing motor oil, a weed-whacker, and other house and garden paraphernalia. In effect, Gene's trailer is the rattiest trailer in the park. Like Willis said, there is always someone who doesn't fit in. At Sandpipers, that someone is Gene.

Find A Penny

"Can you believe I bought it for $300?" Gene brags about his 1998 Ford LTD that pulls to the left and whose electric windows don't roll down.

He navigates the LTD, also with no air conditioning, through Sandpipers 22 acres of clothing optional resort space...which, except for the occasional roaming nudist, seems like a typical gated trailer park. And overweight Anglo, love handles resting against his thighs, cruises past Gene in a golf cart. There is no golf course here, but residents use carts for easy access to the swimming pool, tennis courts or shuffle-board facility. Now, at the start of the summer, the park is almost empty. But come September, October for sure, the park will filled with hundreds of nudist winter Texans. And they'll all be white.

Still, though Sandpipers, and the nudist business throughout the U.S., caters to a predominately Anglo clientele, ethnic minorities are a growing demographic.

"It's obvious. You can see the change in parks, in trade magazines...everywhere that there is nudism," explained a Hispanic female member of Sandpipers who spoke with STN on the condition of anonymity. In her 40's and born in Starr county, she said that she suffered no discrimination as a Hispanic nudist at Sandpipers or other nudist venues. Willis agrees that ethnic minorities are a growing nudist demographic, a statement that is proven by existing research.

Willis in fact argues that she is embracing this fact, recently approving residence for a Mexican couple from Monterrey. Her attempts to remove Gene stem from his failure to meet park requirements, she said, new rules that she put in place last year after she bought the park.

The park will no longer allow cats to roam free, Willis said. Not coincidentally, Gen has cats that roam. With no air conditioning, he leaves his trailer door open, allowing his cats to come and go as they please. The park will no longer allow porches, Willis said. With no air conditioning, the use of a porch is vital for Gene.

Playing The Race Card

Gene said that Willis' new rules are directed at him.

Feeling the victim, Gene has complained to the authorities against Sandpipers on numerous occasions...for operating the kitchen without the proper health inspections, and for new construction without permits. Most of all, when Willis last year sent out a memo ordering Gene to secure his cats, Gene complained to the U.S. Dept. of Housing. A Vietnam-era Veteran with mental health issues, Gene's doctor has suggested that he live with cats. Gene's argument held it's ground, and the Dept. of Housing decided that Gene should be able to keep the cats.

Now, with an eviction notice in hand, Gene said he thinks Willis is retaliating against him for using his legal right to file complaints.

"She trying to make it impossible for me to remain here. I need my cats. They help me emotionally," Gene said.

In eviction papers handed to Gene in June, Willis list Gene's lack of trailer insurance as the reason. But Gene has lived at Sandpipers for 17 years without trailer insurance. At best, his old trailer is worth several hundred dollars. Insurance doesn't make sense for him, he said. The yearly fee would cost as much or more than his trailer's value.

Attorney Linley Boone from Weslaco's Texas Rio Grande Legal Aide, a non-profit law firm serving the economically disadvantaged, said that Gene can stay put at least until his case is heard by a Justice of the Peace.

Boone, however, explained that Gene is willing to pay for trailer insurance.

At this point, though, the second time that Gene has sought counsel against Sandpipers, and after Gene's filling numerous complaints with government entities, Willis said it's too little, too late.

She said that she , too, has consulted attorneys, who have advise her that she has the legal right to evict Gene for failing to conform to lease requirements. This case is heading for a court room battle, Willis said. And she's confident that she'll win.

As a nudist in the Rio Grande Valley, there aren't many options for Gene. Though there is another nudist trailer park north of Weslaco, that park is filled. Unlike many nudists whose way of life is intertwined with travel...visiting nudist resorts, nudist beaches, and public nudist sites that dot the U.S., Gene's income makes such a bare-skinned wanderlust impossible.

Gene said he was born a nudist. But with eviction papers in hand, and a landlord willing to fight the case in court, this U.S. Veteran, the only male Hispanic nudist resort member in the region, maybe forced to pick himself up by his bootstraps, and slip on some pants and a shirt while he's at it.

DO WE REALLY THIS PERSON HERE?HE HAS BEEN A THORN IN MANAGMENT FOR MANY YEARS.DISCRIMINATION WHAT IS THAT,GENE IS BORN IN U.S. SO WAS I

I think the reporter was pretty fair overall, tho perhaps to my eye he slanted it a bit towards Karen. Not everything was addressed. For instance he made reference to the health regs and lack of building permits but then didn't follow thru to "get the rest of the story". Keeping it in perspective the newspaper IS a free rag handed out with real estate promos and other advertisements. The New York Times, it is not.

Maybe the Management is the Thorn and it is time for Management to go.

GENE, THIS ARTICLE SOUND LIKE IT BITE YOU IN THE BUTT.

THE TORN IS GENE, NOT MANAGEMENT
THIS MANAGEMENT IS VERY FAIR TO EVERYBODY LIVING HERE

Gene,

It seem to me that, over the years, you have been taking advantage of people. There is no problem with you been Mexican American.......There is a problem with you trying to do whatever you think is OK maybe not what you should be doing. What is fair for you need to be fair for me and vice-versa.( self sufficient, with kitchen and bathroom plus keep your cat inside and get insurance.) Unfortunately time has come maybe for you to join the rest of us or to go.

Wichever is fine with me.

WANT TO GET RID OF MANAGEMENT??? GET OUT YOUR CHECKBOOK...GENE..
OH MAYBE 600.00 A MONTH WONT CUT IT

This managaement is not fair to everyone, they have their favorites. There are other pets roaming free and many people take advantage. Open your eyes and you might see it. How do you know what is in Gene's trailer? and is it really any of your business? As for joining the rest....why should we?

Gene, if you really need your cat for your emotion??????????????? so that you could be OK emotionally or mentally, I think you need more help than the cats, There are place for people with these kind or problem. I don't think a nudist campgroud can do a lot for you./

this is not about the management.
You live in a community where there is a respect for others, or should have a respect for others. This means that wath is fair for me has to be fair for you.If the rule apply to you, it should apply to me too.The management make the rule but these rules, in general are for the goods or everyone.
So, if youlive in Sandpiper and if you are my neibhor, I want to make sure you have insurance. Also if I have access to public facility, I sure hope to have the same right as you. I also think that the rule about been self sufficient is important.

To end this on friendly note, I have no problem if you take Gene to live with you in your home.I am sure you are self sufficient and you have insurance.

The issue is really about the rules and whether the apply to ALL residents. Those who do not wish to abide by the rules or who find them offensive can find accomodation more appropriate to their wishes. The choice is theirs.

Why do we have 5 respondents who hide behind "anonymous"????

Karen said...

How is the management not fair to everyone? Favorites what do you mean? I have my eyes open, I just can't be everywhere all the time. So if you have a concern about something let me know. I have not had a pet complaint since February. If you have a problem with roaming pets, please let me know and I will address the issue.
People taking advantage of the rules, well I will be giving notices to people after I ask them nicely the first time and we can't work things out.

Are the "coplainers" perhaps those who comment as "anonymous"???

SueZ said...

It certainly is no problem if people want to respond as 'anonymous', in fact it may encourage dialog which is the point of this blog in the first place.

Complaints and discussion can be better addressed here rather than in the pool or hot tub.

So SandyPeople, feel free to leave as many comments as you want to, about whichever topics interest you!

sandpipers is a park with rules and they are simple and pertain to everyone.all who become part of the park read and agree to them or they go somwhere else . i know that this park with all the diverse people in it is where i want to be.
see you all soon

alan said...

suez, If you were the one being complained about, would you rather know who was complaining or not know who was complaining?? I would rather the complaint were addressed directly to me than done behind my back (at the pool/tub or anonymously).

Nice to hear from you, Jay. See y'all next winter.

After talking to Gene at the pool and him quoting that he does'nt care who go's down at this park that ALL people are against him I ask him why stay...he said it's time to shut down this place.like he said the insurance cost more than his trailer.I'll give him 50 bucks and give him his trailer

It is hard to be prejudice to anyone, let alone Hispanics. Their culture and religious background make them think being naked is the same as sex. So do many others, white, black, hispanic, asian to name a few. That is why there are not more Hispanics that come to Sandpipers. I am so tired of people always trying to use the prejudice card!

If Gene tried to be a proper resident, and needed help, many folks may have been willing. We gather cans to assist with poor and needy families every year. We help needy folks based on their need not the color of their skin.

We here at Sandpipers, welcome anyone to our resort. We relish all cultures. We all gather around them especially bilingual folks so that we can learn the language and their culture. I resent Gene thinking the problems he is having is because of his race. It is more because of his nature of not following the rules.

His article claims he makes $600 per month and all he eats is the fruits he grows around his trailer. The truth is there are many programs to assist him. Food stamps, housing and many many more. He created the problems he is currently having because he refuses to follow the written rules.

As far as his cats, responsible pet owners maintain control over their pets. If he is having problems feeding himself, then how is he able to feed all of his cats. Not my concern really, but, animal activist feel that if you are claiming pets, you should have them spade or neutured and their shots kept up. With frequent trips to the veterarian.

My concern is more for the type of mental illness he has. For 17 years he hasn't bothered anyone. However, are we really safe? Are we really sure he will not retaliate? Is he really in control of his illness or could he snap and create havoc.

When you open your front door for everyone to see you dirt, comments and judgements will come. It is our nature.

Did he get permission for those photo's in the park. What other photo's does he have that we don't know about. think about it he said he has a mental problem. Do you feel safe with him.

alan said...

Should there not be concern about those comments made where the target of those comments has no idea from whom they came (whether at the pool/hottub or anonymously) and is therefore unable to defend himself/herself???

After the interviews with Gene and Karen there was no story here. Why did the reporter even take the time to write it.
This hurts my pride in my heritage. If he felt so isolated as one of three Hispanic member of Sanpipers, why did he not reach out to me and my family for friendship. Not once did he ask me to join him and his companion at any of Sanpiper's activities. His last companion was real friendly and I liked her.
Feed himself with the avocado, citrus trees. What a croc.
When did he ever try to sell his crop of avocados. Did he ever include them with a dish at a potluck?
That angers me. What a disgrace to my race.
I am really ashamed of him and his so called pride in his "mexican heritage" (By painting his trailer the colors of the Mexican Flag.) Give me a break. I can understand Sandpiper's management not want a mexican redneck trailer in their park.
Kudos to Karen for her attempts to manicure the park to higher standards. Nudist Resorts in getting off of the Taboo list for many people and it is quickly becoming a more acceptable lifestyle.
Gene has gone too far this time. It will be interesting to see how he is going to get through this one.

Gene:
Get with the program, come to happy hour, bring a dish to the potlucks, socialise with the rest of us, etc. Clean up your site so it is presentable! I do not want other people's animals defication in my site or in my travels around the park! Sandpipers is trying to be a resort not a junkyard and cleaning up your site applies to everyone. We come to sandpipers every winter to enjoy ourselves in a clean, friendly place which Jay and Karen are trying to improve. Why are you hindering their good intentions and work. Be a team player and not a roadblock. Your racial case is nothing more than a fabrication.

Karen and Jay are doing a good job, they may not be perfect. I am not perfect. Quit finding faults and either get with the program or get out!

This man has threatened us all with his eratic behavior. Gene's standard behavior is to threaten and intimidate. At one of the meetings he threatened Ken's life when Ken said he was tired of Gene's cats and was prepared to deal with them. Gene responded that he would kill him if he harmed his cats. How can anyone blame people for wanting to remain anonymous when dealing with such a person? He has threatened or attempted to intimidate more than one person in this park. All management is trying to do is protect us all from this nut who has said time again that he will try to close our park if he is not allowed to abuse our rights by allowing his cats to poop all over the park walk over cars leaving scratches paw prints etc. I hope the judge is told what it is like to experience the smell of fresh cat poop coming from under your trailer.Gene is a selfish bully that should be removed from our park. This thing has nothing to do with race and he should be ashamed of himself to try and make out that it is . A lot of us in this park are veterans and unlike him saw actual combat. He is a user he takes advantage of free legal. He never brings anything to potluck suppers except his plate. His knowledge of the legal system enables him to harrass Karen and hold up building permits etc that will effect us all. Good luck to Karen if she looses so do we all.

alan said...

I agree fully that Gene must go and have clearly endorsed that position directly to Karen.

My comments with respect to "anonymity" are not restricted to the present issue.

Sometimes people need to speak without fear. This blog has given Sandpipers a voice. This particular story is a very scary one for those of us that live here year-round. Gene has looked up everything there is to know about our owner, their family (Children and parents) and businesses. His anger knows no bounds. Some of us actually fear his retribution. He isn't playing "the working with the community card". We are actually fear his stability. So we want to remain anonymous for that reason.

It was not my intention to comment on the Diaz affair, but now that my name has been mentioned (July 17) I feel obliged to confirm what was said. Indeed Diaz did threaten to shoot me if I took action against his cats. I did not consider reporting it to the authorities but now I must give further thought to these threats to my life.

I think it appropriate to comment on my hostility to free roaming animals. Some years ago we had an aquaintance who lost a 12 yr old son to rabies caught from a domestic pet THAT WAS NOT ALLOWED TO ROAM. Rabies is endemic in Texas; all mammals including cats can not only catch it but can transfer it even if innoculated; it is not necessary to be bitten or scratched either as the disease can be transmitted in aerosol form. In the US there are deaths from rabies each year; the primary cause being domestic cats.

I hope I have made my point. Gene Diaz and his cats are a health liability to ALL the residents of this park.

With respect to his attitude, he obviously holds himself to be above the rest of us and above complying with park rules. His attacks on Karen are vindictive and selfish. He is threatening our privacy, our lifestyle and for property owners, potentially the value of your investment.

Time for Diaz to GO AS HE IS A LIABILITY to Sandpipers and all its site holders..
