Scarves & Hobbies

Several months ago I blogged about the Special Olympic project inspired by Mariana. She sent me a link to this worthwhile event I encourage you to participate in.

Athletes at the 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Idaho will be wrapped in a little handmade love, courtesy of knitters and crocheters across the country. Coats & Clark is sponsoring a project to provide each athlete with a scarf created in white and delft blue Red Heart® Super Saver® yarns.

Click http://www.coatsandclark.com/Crafts/Crochet/Features/Special+Olympics.htm
to go to their site for instructions. This looks like a great project that even beginner knitters can participate in. Check it out!

From Mariana: Regarding the Olympic Scarves....This is what I am thinking...(Ohhh noooo!). I can get a box from the post office and ask Darbi to keep it in her Texas Room.

They can be dropped off in the box labeled United States Post Office or some special sign. Darbi keeps her front door open most of the time and I am sure she wouldn't mind. When I give Darbi her massage on Wednesday I can collect and record the # of Scarves that have been dropped off. How does the BARE SCARF PROJECT for SPECIAL OLYMPICS sound? And we can have another box for granny squares for the BARE SQUARES OF LOVE ... For the comfort throws. I guess I think I have it all figured out. Except for one thing. The note that should be attached to the scarf. I have no idea what to write except "Good Luck".

Thanks, Mariana, for organizing this project. Phaleta tells me she has a gazillion knitting needles and crochet hooks for us to use. The pattern for the scarves is super easy (any pattern will do as long as the colors are delft blue & white), so anyone can make a scarf...ANYONE! This is NOT a 'ladies only' project. Knitting and crocheting are great stress relievers and satisfying hobbies. Mariana has made some very nice items.

Here is an afghan she made for her husband, Bruce. Her first large sized project...is she happy, or what? Good job, Mariana! I know Bruce is proud. And for her sister's renewal of wedding vows, this lovely afghan. And her kid's Spanish teacher got a cute bookmark to celebrate Diez y Seiz de Septiembre. Note the colors...how cute is this?

To show versatility....not all projects are scarves or afghans or sweaters...no indeed! This is the beginnings of a crocheted hammock! Too cool!

Invitation: I enjoy reading about, and seeing pictures of, your hobbies and crafts. Why don't you talented people send me some pictures and a little info on what you do/create in you leisure hours. I know there are some very creative people at Sandpipers. We would all love to see what you do. (And I'll put you on the contest list for the super prizes to be awarded to three lucky Sandpeople in November).

Please add 50 cents to each scarf added to the box to cover postage. And a note would be nice to be attached to the recipient of each scarf made.

Thanks Sandpaper for the opportunity to do this. And I believe this Blog is the best idea anyone has come up with in a long time to keep us informed of the happenings in this Resort.
Double KUDOS for Sue and Jim.
