March 10 Olympic Update:

Hello group.
Just a quick message.
Sign up for ladies water volleyball  is today, Site 308 by 5pm.
The team list will be up tomorrow at 11 AM
at the volleyball pool.
There has not been a decision if it will happen due to cool weather.
Knowing the ladies they will play no matter what.
We do need a few good men to be line watchers for this event.
Also the sign up for men's water volleyball will be by 5pm on March 11, Site 308.
There are a few spots left for The Battle of The Balls cook-off.
Please pass around this info to your neighbors and friends.
Next update will be tomorrow morning.

From Tom: Tuesday's Bike Ride Canceled.

By my reckoning the weather rock is wet this morning.
The weather radar looks wet also.  So... the bike ride scheduled for today, March 10 is hereby officially canceled.

Next week is our marathon bike ride, Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge.  We will ride the scenic loop which takes us along the Laguna Madre and then inland.  The ride takes about three hours and covers about 12 miles.  We eat a sack lunch at an overlook on the Laguna Madre, Redhead Pond and the coastal plain.  We have seen Nalgai from this vantage point in the past.  This ride will whip you into shape for the Olympics which begin the next day.
Maybe, just maybe we can have nice
weather for this ride!

A Travel Tip from Patsy...

Here's another Texas treasure for folks traveling through North East Texas.  Jefferson is located about 20 miles north of Marshall, TX on Hwy. 59.  The whole history of Jefferson is too long to be told here, but you can visit Welcome to the Official Web site of the historic city of Jefferson, Texas for more information.

I would like to relate my experiences in Jefferson many years ago.  When we visited Jefferson, it was Spring Break, and it was raining. We didn't let that stop us from walking around and seeing everything.  We toured the lovely Excelsior Hotel, all furnished in period antiques.  We  would have loved to stay there, but decided it wasn't appropriate for our small children.  We saw Jay Gould's personal railroad car which was quite ostentatious (sterling silver sink), the Opera House, and many of the myriad Victorian homes.

We camped at Caddo Lake State Park.  Caddo Lake is the only natural lake in Texas; the rest are reservoirs formed by dams.  You can take boat tours through the cypress trees; there is also great fishing.  Jefferson, believe it or not, was once the second busiest port in Texas, after Galveston.  Boats came up from New Orleans and St. Louis.  You can still see some of the old docks.

My father had an uncle who lived in Jefferson.  My father remembered visiting him and hearing the boat whistles.  The uncle was a shrewd man who portrayed himself as a country-fied gentleman who sat on his front porch with hound dogs all over the yard.  But he started making syrup and called it Blackburn's Syrup (Blackburn is my maiden name). It is still sold in grocery stores today.  We visited the Blackburn Syrup plant while in Jefferson.

If you like history, Victorian houses, fishing, camping, or anything else I have mentioned, you'll love Jefferson (not to be confused with Jefferson County).

Thanks, Patsy

BATTLE OF THE BALLS
The Ball of the Balls sign up sheets are also at Site 308.  If there are more than 15 entries there will be a drawing for the 15 that get selected.  Each entry will be provided meat of their choice to make their famous meatballs.  The rules for the contest are on the entry form.

NEW EVENTS
We have 3 new events this year.  Iron Peeps -  will be 3 grueling challenges that test skills to new levels, not really.  Competitors will start at the road by the basketball court and fast walk (no running allowed) to under the shade canopy next to the pool where they will have to do 15 bench presses, then fast walk to the pool, jump in touch the side and swim to the other side, touch and swim back.  There will be a division for men and women and the bench press for the ladies will not be as heavy.  The swimming will be across the shallow end, so walking back and forth will be possible for non-swimmers.

The next new event is the Ritz Challenge where you will have a Ritz cracker on your forehead and have to get it to your mouth without touching with your hands.  Should be a lot of strange faces show up for that one.

The last new event is Pool Shots.  This will be at Jakz on the new Pool Table, thanks Dave.  It will be a timed event to see how quick and accurate you are getting your balls in pockets.

I Sure Hope You Were There!

The Grande Dames of Menopause!

The laughter was almost non-stop, the applause deafening.  I dare say this was one of the best performances Sandpiper's has seen yet!

Since this was a one time shot, if you weren't there...well, you really missed something....and if you were lucky enough to be in the audience, weren't they terrific?
