Throw-Back Happy Hour

We all met in the field for a Happy Hour how it used to be...

for a little nostalgia,
 some good fellowship,
some happiness..

Why can't we do this
ALL THE TIME?

There was an impromptu beer tasting...
(thanks, JohnP!)
Announcements about upcoming events...
Thank you's for past services...

Oh, and food!

OMG...such junk food...loved it!

There was a whirlwind of chips, salami, cheese, nuts...
and any guess as to how many participated?

An ALL TIME RECORD of close to 80 peeps!
Can't we just continue this fun event?

February 2013 - Sandpipers Bike Rides

February 2013 - Sandpipers Bike Rides

February 5 – Bicentennial Boulevard Bike Trail and
International Museum of Arts and Science (IMAS)

This will be a new ride for us.  We will park at the IMAS which is on Nolana Avenue and unload our bikes.  Bicentennial Boulevard is immediately east of the museum and the bicycle trail runs north and south from there.  We will explore this bicycle trail which runs for several miles in each direction.  The ride will be on level paved surfaces.  The distance will depend on the weather, shorter if cold, longer if warm.  The ride should be between 4 and 8 miles.  Following the ride we will visit the IMAS.  Lunch will be at Double Dave’s Pizza on N10th Street near Trenton.  Admission to the IMAS is $5.00 per person for seniors.

February 12 – Hidalgo Pump House

The historic Hidalgo Pump House sits along the Rio Grande River near the International Bridge to Reynosa, Mexico.  There is a $2 admission fee to the pump house grounds.  A tour of the pump house is available and in interesting look at the past in Hidalgo County.  This pump house moved water north to McAllen where it was lifted again for its trip north to Edinburg.  The ride is on a paved trail with a few sections of gravel.  There are minor elevation changes as we ride up onto the levee and again coming down.  We get a close up look at the border wall as we ride along the levee overlooking the wall.  The trail continues past reservoirs for the irrigation system and then runs along the irrigation canal.  Lunch following the ride will be at Logan’s Restaurant on 10th Street in McAllen.

February 19 – Bentsen Rio Grande Valley State Park and World Birding Center

Admission fee $5 per person.  Bentsen Rio Grande Valley State Park and World Birding Center is accessible on foot or bicycle only.  There is a tram tour offered several times a day.  Bicycle type touring cars (2 and 4 passenger 4 wheel pedal vehicles) are available for rent.  There are numerous feeding stations with blinds for viewing the wildlife at close range.  Many birds, javalina and other animals are seen at or near these feeding stations.  Bring:   Camera, Binoculars, Bird Identification Guide (if you have one).  We’ll eat lunch at BJ’s Brewhaus.

February 26 – South Padre Island

South Padre Island in the off season makes for a pleasant ride.  We will travel together to the island leaving Sandpipers gate at the usual 9:00 a.m. time.  Those who wish can travel independently and meet us at the Convention Center parking lot on the north side of the developed area on the island.  The group traveling from the park should arrive shortly before 11:00 a.m. at the Convention Center.  We will ride from the Convention Center south to Isla Blanca Park.  There is no admission charge for bicycles entering the park.  After riding through the park we’ll stop at Dirty Al’s Seafood.  Bring a bicycle lock for the lunch stop.  After lunch we return to the Convention Center.   We will ride through neighborhoods on the Gulf and Laguna Madre side of the island on the way to and from Isla Blanca Park.  The total distance of this ride is about 10 miles on level paved roads.  Bring a camera, water, sun screen and a bike lock.

All rides depart Sandpipers gate at 9:00 a.m.  Rides cancelled if no one shows up.  If people show up we go!  Supplies and equipment which may be useful on rides are sun screen, insect repellant, water, camera, binoculars and a spare inner tube for your bicycle.  Tom carries a set of tools including a tire pump and patch kit on all bicycle rides.

Backstage at Bandstand.

I took lots of pictures during the frantic backstage mayhem of American Bandstand.
What a BLAST we had!

Happy Hour Throwback!

Bob and Carma have permission from Karen to have a Happy Hour at the old place in the corner of the field in front of Karen and Jay's house.

How about we have it this Thursday, the 31st. at 4 PM
...the usual time.

Bring a chair, bring a drink and something good to eat.  Pass around snacks would be nice.

We were introduced to everyone in the park on our first visit here at one of these Happy Hours in the field.  It was great and so many others were also introduced at one of those happy hours.

If we get the word out maybe we can have a good crowd.

Ya Think?

2013 ADOPT A FAMILY Auction

Announcing the
2013 ADOPT A FAMILY
Auction

Saturday March 2, 2013 at 3:00pm at the Pavilion

We are looking for donations from the heart such as dinners, services, homemade items (pies, jams etc, etc.) and other personal services that we can auction to support our Adopt a Family 2013 program.

At about 9.2 percent the Rio Grande Valley has the highest unemployment rate in Texas. Unemployment is a trickle down event and those lowest on the socio-economic ladder bear the brunt of this.  While the United States exports millions of tons of food stuff yearly to far off countries, we here at SPR are committed to do our part by assisting local families. We are fortunate that we have the fantastic support of the residents of SPR.

We are given names of families from the local school counselor. The families we have supported in the past have had great needs. We provide toys for the children, school clothes, after school clothes and other necessities. We also provide fresh provisions and canned goods so that the entire family can have a Christmas to remember.

All of this takes, in addition to a lot of work by the many SPRer’s who help, money in order to purchase goods for the Christmas delivery.

So on Saturday March 2, 2013 at 3:00pm at the Pavilion we will hold an auction.

We are looking for items to auction and appreciate your support.

Any donation of dinners or other services will be valid until March 31, 2014.

Please contact: Mary or John at Lot #5.

Lost...Lost and Grieving!

Yesterday, Saturday, I received a cute little dress in the mail...
I am an  addicted Ebay shopper!

Between Bandstand shows I tried it on...
yeah!  It fit, I loved it.

Sent it home, I thought, with Jim.
(he has NO memory of this part).

Somewhere there is a little grey dress lost!
Here is what it looks like:
Light grey, short sleeves, kangaroo front pocket,
cotton, size large, brass trim around the neckline.

Just a cute little cover-up style dress.
If found tell Sue Z (Me)  #38
I will love you forever and give you 15 minutes of fame!

VolleyBall Spiking.

"Having observed a few volleyball games
in which I was not participating,
and after some comments from others,
I am of the opinion that there
 is too much hard spiking
 occurring in co-ed volleyball games
(by myself as well as other men -
you know who you are).

I do not want to create a situation where
the ladies do not want to play
because of hard spiking.

 Therefore please be advised
that the existing rules are amended
to read that there will be
 NO spiking of the volleyball
 in CO-ED games.

I expect that if spiking occurs,
comments will be made to the offender
(do not hesitate to speak up ladies)
 and the behavior will cease.

If it does not, I will recommend to Karen
that the number of days of co-ed volleyball
 be reduced, and additional day's
set be aside for ladies only.

 In tournament events,
I do not want to have to be a referee
 instead of a player
but I will step in if I have to
if the rule is not self-enforcing.

Spiking will continue to be permitted
in ladies-only or men's only games or events."
Thanks,
Ian

Food For the Soul...

There are really good cooks here at Sandpipers.
Even great cooks.
Bernie's cheese or chocolate fondue or Mandarin Chicken...
Bill W.'s BBQ'd steaks, or his prime rib...
or Annie's terrific BBQ sauce.
Barry & Joey's LiverFest...or his brisket or turkey...
Pecan Pie a la Ellen...
So many good meals,
such delicious food...
Brings me to a burning question.
What is the most bizarre, unusual food you've ever eaten?
Mountain oysters?  Ho-hum...so yesterday!
I've been watching Andrew Zimmern and Anthony Bourdain too much maybe..

Ever had Black Pudding?
Fried grasshoppers?
Pig's feet, ears, tails, or eyeballs?
Brains?
Durian?
Balut?  (Extra points for THAT one!)
Leave a comment...I really want to know.

Owls Eat Mice!

The 2012 owls have hidden 13 mice within the park and they provided written clues to everyone Monday night
at the pizza and beer function.

Please remind everyone who finds a mouse:
DO NOT TAKE THE MOUSE!!!!

If you think you have discovered the correct location but the mouse is missing please write it down anyway and turn it in.
 Once again,
DO NOT TAKE OR MOVE THE MOUSE!!!!!

Just write down where you found it on your clue sheet and be sure that you turn it in by the 10:00 AM Thursday deadline.

There is a white box on the porch at site #12 to deposit your answers and be sure to put your name and site number on your answer sheet.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,
Marilynn
