Trick 'N' Drinkin' Info

Finally got some info on how Trick 'N' Drinkin' will work.

Thanks Big Daddy Steve.

I learned this from listening to your Thursday morning program on
KNUDE 92.1FM, our very own radio station.
And no, you can't hear KNUDE in Canada...in fact you can only pick it up in the park and about a mile or so outside.

Anyway...here's the idea.
From 5 PM-6:30 PM,
You set up a table outside your home and offer a little libation to trick or treaters as they pass by.
Then, if you think you have a winner, take your potion down to the pavilion by 7PM so it can be judged.
Winners will be announced by 7:30.
Hope I got this right...

Golf Info

'Share Your Story' from Patsy.

I recently bought a car at a well-known dealership in McAllen. I fell in love with the Nissan Altima and spent several hours driving it, looking at it, and contemplating buying it.

When I got to the nitty-gritty, I was taken to a man who tried to persuade me that I needed about $2,000.00 in warranties on various things.

When I got to the Credit Manager, I began to have doubts about the $2,000.00 of extra warranties.

I told the Credit Manager that I would like to call my financial advisor, Mike Perez, at Wells-Fargo Investments. He had no problem with that, and I called Mike from the C.M.'s office.

After I told Mike about the situation, he asked to speak to the C.M.

He informed the C.M. that I didn't need those extras and to figure my auto cost without them. I had not planned to finance the car, but the C.M. checked and offered me a very low interest rate. Mike advised me that it was a great deal and that I should take it.

Now, the very low payment will be paid out of my Wells-Fargo account, and a lot of my money will still be working for me.

It felt really good to have someone "in my court" on this deal.

Share Your Story-Elaine's Cataract Surgery.

I like the idea of Peeps sharing their experiences about
 services,  shopping, any experiences,
here in "The Valley",
both positive and negative, (and this story has both!).

Send me your input...best restaurant, worst food ever?, great doctor, horrendous customer service...well, you get the idea.
Send to me, The Blog Goddess, at

****
This is from Ken & Elaine, #29:
Elaine thought the folks might like to know about her recent experience with cataract surgery and two of the local surgeons.

CATARACT SURGERY

Good news and a caution (if I may). A few weeks ago my good lady Elaine was diagnosed with cataracts and was recommended to have cataract surgery in both eyes. What most of you do not know is that she has been wearing glasses since he was three years old, and those glasses were a bit like the bottoms of Coke bottles.

She has now undergone the surgery on both sides and I am delighted to tell you that she has 20/20 vision after just 2 weeks! She is like a little girl who was suddenly got a new Dolly as she can now see things that she has never seen before. How absolutely wonderful!

Now for the word of caution and recommended due diligence. Our optician in Edinburg, Dr Navarro, (who is, by the way, very good) referred us to Dr. Pena. The first thing that stood out was that neither the Doctor nor his staff did any more than a very cursory examination of Elaine’s eyes. When we met the doctor, Elaine, not being a Spanish speaker, called him Dr. Pena, as in Penna. He promptly took her to task for not pronouncing his name correctly, as in Penya. From then on he proceeded to brag about all the surgeries he has done and to promote very heavily the multi-focal “Crystalens” IOL. He briefly mentioned a lesser lens but did not promote it. When we met his clerk we discovered that the lesser lens was the one covered by Medicare and was essentially free, and the Crystalens would cost $6500, (being considered by Medicare as cosmetic.). At this point we terminated the interview so that we could do some extensive research on the Internet. We also, not liking the attitude of Dr. Pennnyyaa, who we thought was arrogant and high-handed, notwithstanding that he is a good surgeon, sought a second opinion.

The second opinion was given to us by Dr. Shah who was modest and gentle and he and his staff did a thorough examination of Elaine’s eyes. He explained that he could install the Mono-focal lens which would be covered by Medicare or the multi-focal lens at a cost of $4500 including any surgery required for astigmatism. After this meeting we went away and did a lot more research. We found at least five different kinds of lens as well as a number of manufacturers. We also found the typical problems associated with each kind. For example the multi-focal, which would give clear vision from close-up to infinity has problems with glare, halos and contrasting similar colors. There is also a possibility that prescription glasses would be required. The mono-focal lens has a much smaller risk of the above problems but simple magnifying off-the-shelf glasses would be required for reading. At this time Dr Shah met with us a second time and then Elaine settled on the mono-focal with the doctor’s blessing. And two weeks later it was all done, 20/20 vision and no discomforts!

If your ophthalmologist suggests cataract surgery we strongly recommend Dr. Shah over Dr. Pennyyaa, for both cost and attitude. We also strongly recommend that you do due diligence on all the options before proceeding.

Get Ready to Wine!

Greetings to all our Sandpiper friends:

We will again have Wine Appreciation classes for the 11th year.

Bernie and I have had a great time here in Kokomo even though it has been hot. We shared some time in southern Indiana with Donna and Jon checking out the wineries. We also attended the fifth Sandpiper reunion in Granger, Indiana, Labor Day week end. We are looking forward to our stay in Sandpipers this winter. We expect to arrive in late October and stay till late March.

This year's classes are as follows:

December 9th:
Bring your favorite wine Sunday @ 3:00 PM to the Flip Flopz Room. Bring a favorite wine (or two) and a little wine snack that complements your wine. This is open to everyone and is free if you bring a wine! Everyone has had a great time in the past at this event and many varied wines have appeared.

January 13th:
We will be conducting a "Wine Identity Tasting". We will have a few whites followed by a few reds for you to try to identify. This should be a lot of fun - you should be experts by now.

February 10th:
"Where is the Beef" Two beef entrees will be served with suggested wines. Do you approve or do you have a better wine to pair with the entrees.

March 10th:
"Texas Wines" Bernie and I will be touring Texas wineries and collecting some samples of the industry for your evaluation.

The January, February and March classes will be $10.00 each per person and payment secures your spot as usual.
We have already two paid spots
before we left Sandpipers last March.

We are looking forward to these events.
Have a great fall and we will see you at Sandpipers.

Update about Karen and A goodby to Stevie...

From Bill:
Karen came home from the hospital around noon today. She wants to sleep in the worst way but can't seem to for some reason.
I guess it's because of all the drugs.

At any rate, she has another 9 days of IV antibiotics on an outpatient basis. After that, we should be able to start home. I don't know exactly how long it will take us to get home, that depends on how long she can travel each day.
We will wait and see.

Karen and Bill Hazlett

Just took a pic of Alan with Stevie's memorial plaque.

Bittersweet.

She was a super person, very accomplished and talented.
He saw the bell pull, and remarked, "Stevie could have stared at that for awhile then reproduced it."
A complicated knot...but she did many like it.

When I asked for clarification I received this,

Update on Karen H.

From Bill:

Karen had a bad night but is now resting somewhat comfortably. She hasn't had high fever for several days but has been having extreme migraines that completely incapacitate her.

Her white blood count was elevated last night but that could be due to the drugs that she was given for a test.

It seems that every day comes with new challenges for her to overcome. Hopefully she will overcome them all soon and we can start on our trip home.

I want to thank everyone for the good thoughts and prayers and keep them coming.

Plan on Zumba for Fun & Exercise!

This season of Zumba will combine Zumba Dance Fitness and Light Weight Training.  This program is assured to provide the participant with a safe and effective, redefining total body workout-the same party atmosphere with a weighted activity.

Participants will need light weights (1-3 pounds) or Zumba Toning Sticks (available on Zumba.com). The 1 pound weights are recommended until you are familiar with the program.  If you are interested in ordering Zumba Toning Sticks, please see Barb before ordering for a price discount.

For those new to Zumba this season, bring plenty of water, a small towel, weights, a coin belt (optional for the ladies) or anything else to have a good time.

Zumba will begin Monday, Nov. 19th at 9 AM and will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays at 9 AM, in the pavilion.

Hope to see you at the party!

Desperadoes at the Border Update!

Smiling, all happy with Mr. Phamacist!
Little Mary, if you only knew what was about to happen!
*
If you've been following the Sherry saga, where she was fined $330 for over-the-counter medication when passing back into the U.S. from Progresso....here is the rest of the story.

Back story:

First time through the agent told her she could only have a one month supply (heartburn meds) and she should return to the pharmacist and get her money back.  Pharmacist instead poured three months pills into one bottle.
Didn't fool the agent.
It ticked him off and Sherry was fined.

Incensed Tony called KRGV TV and they did a story about it, and then a followup where the TV station arranged a buy of the same meds, WITH NO PROBLEMS CROSSING AT ALL.

The Rest of the Story:

Jim and I ran into Tony a few minutes ago at Lowes.
He told us about the meeting they just had with border patrol.
Bottom line is so sorry, we are right and you are wrong.
Each agent can decide who gets thru with what.
Sherry was just unlucky as the letter of the law says
 ONE MONTH AT A TIME
unless you have a doctor's order for more.
Pharmacist also just threw up his hands in dismay
(but didn't help pay the fine).

So...they got screwed and suggest anyone buying any meds from Mexico...do one month at a time and stockpile.
