Adopt-A-Family Farewell

Mary and I would like to thank all of the Sandpiper Residents who have helped us this year and in all of the previous eight years.

Through your generosity we have been able to assist 26 families comprised of 59 adults and 87 children.
We have spent well over $25,000 accomplishing this.

The long hours, many trips to the grocery store, Walmart, Dollar Store, looking for appliances at reasonable prices and the uncountable miles travelled to accomplish this has been overwhelming at times. But it has also been rewarding to see the smiling children and happy adults when the Sandpiper’s caravan arrived at the homes of these very deserving neighbors.
We are sure that the many people who helped us contributing money, time, auction items and use of their vehicles to deliver to the families a Christmas they will never forget, will have paid it forward in one way or another.
Mary and I have decided that the 2015 Adopt a Family program is our last. There will be no auction this winter.

Once again thank you for all your help, support
and confidence in us over the last eight years.

Thanks
John & Mary

Open House Reminder

Remember John and Sue's CHRISTMAS OPEN HOUSE!!
What is an open house?  It is NOT a super Happy Hour.
This is a party to spend some holiday cheer around
to your friends and neighbors.
You bring a drink, a nibble to share (gourmet if you want to impress!)...visit, admire the decor, steal a kiss or two under the mistletoe-then drift away to your next event!
It's supposed to be an ebb and flow type party. So come for a little while, anytime between 4-6pm.

***************************************

You are all invited to a
Christmas Open House
at John and Sue's fantastically decorated house-#37
Friday, December 18,

Do NOT bring chairs,
(circulate, drink a little, find the mistletoe,
flit from one goodie tray to the next.)

Do BYOB,

Do break out your special recipes
(it's Christmas!) to impress and amaze.

This is a holiday meet and greet for all Sandpeeps
to wish a Very Merry to one and all.

As for the parking...remember the NovemberFest parking rules?  Park on the side of the road, do not even consider parking on the grass or Santa will leave a lump of coal in your stocking!
 Don't block the road.

So save the date, mark your calendar, enter into your iphone:

Listen!!!

Quebec is calling....

Lucie and Robert will be leaving us (after this season) for a few years work in Quebec.  She has signed a two year contract and says, "Who knows what will happen after that!"
Soooo....
their wonderful trailer and lot are up for sale.
Lot 429

Roulette "DesignerXL-2000" by Jayco.
It's 30 feet long with two slides.
Gas heaters, both individual and trailer,
One bedroom with a BIG bed!
One shower and one bathroom-separate.

plus:

An 8 X 8 Gazebo,
A shed,
and the concrete is included.

All this for the bargain price of $9000,
which is not written in stone, but should be as the cost
of the trailer alone could easily top $9000!
Wait!  Price is slashed to $6000!

So take a look at lot 429 if only to wish them Good Luck!
This little poster says $9,000...Wrong...it's been reduced to $6000!
And no washing machine.

Veteran's Day.

Beautiful job Ernesto!!!

From Karen's Comments.
Our Veteran’s Day ceremony will be held on Wednesday, Nov 11, beginning at 11:00 am. We will have the gate shut off during the presentation (until 11:30 am). We hope that you will be able to join us for our program and then come down to the pavilion at 5 pm for our Veteran’s Happy Hour Salute.

Barb #11 is bringing in a new avenue of volunteer-ism for our local valley veterans. We plan to thank and raise a “salute” to our Sandpiper resident veterans with a ‘super happy hour’ format. Please bring a finger food snack to share. Our super happy hour will flow right into the Red White and Blue Pub Nite.
Looking ahead: This year our Thanksgiving Dinner will be potluck style. We just need to have a count of those planning to participate so that we will have enough turkey cooked and place settings ready. If you would like to donate for the Local Food Pantry, we are accepting donations in the office. Our goal is to be able to present the Food Pantry with $1000.

Christmas Gifting

Barb has had a busy summer and has lined up several very worthwhile causes for us to consider.

*********************
Donation list for the
Alfredo Gonzales Texas State Veteran's Home in McAllen.
This is a facility of approximately 120 male and 35 female veterans.  We are collecting gifts for the residents.
Items needed are:
cologne
body wash
men's white t-shirts-med/large
slippers-women's/med
men-lg/xlg
lap robes
blankets
cloth bags (to hang on back of wheelchairs)
socks-same size as slippers
or
anything you would give to your mother/father
at Christmas who reside in a home.
or
A donation of money.  Money would go towards buying musical listening devices (such as IPODS, NANO'S) for Alzheimers patients in the Alzheimers wing.  Research has shown that music sooths persons with Alzheimers when they become upset or irritated.  The home is hoping to purchase one for each Alzheimers patient with music downloaded for his or her individual taste.

**************
Also we are collecting magazines for the VA Outpatient Clinic waiting area at the corner of McCall and Hackberry.  If you leave your name and address on the magazine, the VA will send you a thank you letter and then remove them before putting them in the waiting area.  You may also remove them yourself.  Magazines should be appropriate for veterans and their families.

Please leave items on patio #10 (Brad & Barb)
 in the appropriate box.

*********************
The Edinburg Police Dept sponsors "Blue Santa" every year, collecting toys for children under the age of 13.  You may place a donation for this cause on Barb's patio by Dec 11.
  No need to wrap.

Questions?  Talk to Barb, Lot 10.

Sandpipers Spectacular NovemberFest Beer Tasting!

Sandpipers Beer Tasting NovemberFest

Monday, Nov. 9, 4-6pm (rain date Nov. 10 )

Sites 36 & 37

Everyone is invited! The whole park-tell your friends!

*1. Bring 2 unusual, unique, or foreign beers (per person).

*2. Bring your own chairs. Apartment dwellers-chairs will be reserved for you!

*3. This is a Super Happy Hour so bring incredible and delicious food...from appetizers to main dishes, even desserts! (electricity is available for crock pots).

*4. Parking golf carts is limited so park only on left or right side of the road leaving a car pass-thru...and for Heaven's sake, don't park in the field or you'll disappear forever!!!!!

Tasting of all beers will be in 2 oz. cups while you acquire vast amounts of skilled beer tasting knowledge.
Questions?  Talk to John-37, Jon-36 or me (SueZ-38)

First bit of skilled beer tasting knowledge!
Despite my instruction on the proper way to taste beer....swirl, sniff, sniff, sniff, then sip, savor, swallow...past beer tasters were more of the slurp and burp, 'knock it back and ask for more' persuasion.

Second bit of skilled knowledge:

Common Beers
Ideal food matches are below.

Ale:

Pair with: Burgers; buffalo wings; Asian food; Mexican food; spicy food; nutty food; fried food; pizza; steaks; Cheddar, Parmesan, or Romano cheeses.

Bock beer:

Pair with: Gruyère, Emmental, and Swiss cheeses; Cajun food; jerk chicken; beef; sausage; seared foods.

Fruit beer/lambic:

Pair with: Mascarpone cheese; light white meat; foods driven by herbs and spices; duck and pork dishes with sweet components (avoid very tart lambics); pickled dishes (great with tart lambics); salads with fruity dressings; fruity desserts.

Lager:

Pair with: Shellfish; light seafood; sushi; grilled pork and chicken; not-too-heavy pasta dishes (without cream or meat sauces); Southeast Asian food; Latin food; Mexican food; spicy food.

Pilsner:

Pair with: American cheese; Muenster, Havarti, and Monterey Jack cheeses; salads; light seafood; salmon; tuna; trout; asparagus; Asian food; Mexican food; spicy food.

Porter:

Pair with: Smoked foods; barbecue; sausage; rich stews; meats; bacon; chili; braised dishes.

Stout:

Pair with: Roasted foods; smoked foods; barbecued/grilled foods; salty foods; oysters; rich stews; braised dishes; chocolate; desserts (ideally the beer is sweeter than the dish).

Wheat Beer/ Hefeweizen:

Pair with: Light soups and salads; vegetarian dishes; sushi; Gruyère cheese and Feta/goat cheese; sweet and fruity Asian dishes; citrus-flavored dishes, including dessert and salad dressings.

Third bit of skilled beer knowledge-just where do 2oz plastic cups fit in?

Six glasses that will cover most occasions:

Basic pint glasses - Many brewpubs and bars use tumbler or shaker pint Pint glassglasses, and you've probably got some of those at home. These are sturdy, easy to stack and OK for serving many styles of beer. That's why they are popular, but it also means that they aren't great at anything. A British-style pint glass, bulged near the rim, will serve you better for pale ales, bitter, porters and stouts. The glass will draw in the distinctive aroma hops you expect in an American pale ale, while also capturing the darker, roasted malt flavors of stout.

Pilsner glassPilsner glasses - A proper pilsner glass is tall with an inverted cone shape and focuses the hop aroma of a beer. It allows for zesty carbonation and a robust head.

Weizen glasses - You need the height of one of these to serve a traditional Bavarian weizen (wheat) with a big head and high carbonation. The slightly bowed-out shape and narrower top will focus the yeasty, fruity aroma.

Weisen glass

GobletGoblets - Excellent for big and malty beers where hop aroma plays a small role in the flavor profile. The bowl should be big enough to hold the whole beer and still collect the aromas you want to savor before drinking. Some call these chalices, some goblets and while their may be a technical distinction between the two don't worry about it.

TulipTulips and snifters - These accentuate the nose for specially aromatic beers. A snifter has a somewhat smaller opening and taller cup. Its design is perfect for aromatic Belgian ales. Snifters are ideal for barley wines, allowing the complexity of malt aromas and alcohol to blend. Yes, a brandy snifter will work fine. If you are serving smaller amounts then wine glasses make an acceptable alternative.

Thistles - We are getting into specialty glassware here but these are too Thistlecute to leave out. The are bowed at the bottom, then open a little like a pilsner. They also work with Belgian ales, but think of them first when drinking Scottish ales. They will accent the malty aromas while allowing your beer to sneak under a robust head. Many single-malt whiskey drinkers favor a smaller version of a thistle, but without a stem.

So save the date:  Nov 9, Monday afternoon, 4-6
See you there (blonde wigs optional)

Today it rained all afternoon.  Sometimes really heavily, but all in all, maybe 2 inches.  South of us in Weslaco they got tons more.  We were lucky.  Of course Jay doesn't feel lucky as he is babysitting a pump....but all in all, no problemo!

An End in Sight to Horrible Summer

I have had the worst summer health wise, but the end is in sight.

While in Oregon my legs started to swell, swell so much that I had to go to the doctor before we got home to rule out the usual suspects  All is normal, but I eventually lost almost 30 pounds of water in a month.  What caused this, you ask.  No answers yet but all my vitamins are stopped for now....toxic vitamin reaction, plus addiction to pain meds seems likely.  For awhile I was so confused I tried to change the TV channels with the phone.

Still am shaky. Then to add insult to injury I fell out to bed while reaching for my glasses.  Stripped the flesh completly off my upper arm.  What a mess!

Peeps are returning.  Look out for potholes on Seminary Rd.  They are bad.

VolleyBall is starting to be more populated.  Sami is trying out new recipes.

As soon as I can get back into the swing of things I'll post more.

Gnats!

Gnats!
Aren't they terrible right now?
Here's an antidote:
Mary said she's gonna try some Vanilla, so she did.
I guess it must have worked.
So I have now tried it three times, and it has worked wonderfully for me.
Get your bottle of Vanilla, put some on your fingertips,
dab it around your ears, across your forehead,
and on the tip of your nose.
VOILA!!
 No gnats for hours!

And it smells great, too! No stinky chemical smell on your face. Or that taste in your throat. It works for me!

You're Welcome!  :-)

Adopt-a-Family Begins

I haven't done much with the blog this summer 'cause I've been having a difficult time healthwise.  Blew up like the StaPuff Marshmallow Man for some reason and had to get treatment with a follow-up here at home.  Still not back to normal, but getting better.
**********

Here is a lovely message from John & Mary:

This morning John and I had the luxury of time to sit and watch the Pope’s visit to the White House. We listened attentively to the Pope’s message as he reiterated to care for the poor and the marginalized. That was when we realized that that is exactly what you as members of SPR are already doing.
You give of your time, talent and money to make Christmas more meaningful to the less fortunate families in the local area. For this we thank you. It is very humbling to know that we are truly following the teachings of Pope Francis.
For this John and I would like to express our since thanks for your support as we begin our Christmas "Adopt A Family" Program.

Latest from the Hoosier State.

Glorious weather here at Sunny Haven (well a hint of rumble and a little drizzle a few days ago, but mostly sunny and warm (not hot!)

We celebrated Catherine's birthday last night with a surprise coconut cake and Dick & Sharon's lovely, creamy homemade ice cream.

The food has been spectacular...grilled chicken, smoked ham, grilled brats and burgers, spaghetti...and all the trimmings you could ever expect.

Pool in the afternoon, hot tub when you get cold, petanque, scrabble, wine tasting, wine drinking....did I mention the wine?
Bob & Bernie have outdone themselves with his homemade wine...it's terrific!

Almost every day somebody goes to the local market, Martin's, which is the best you've ever seen!  Even beats HEB!

Tomorrow we'll all head into different directions.  Jim & I are headed back to the valley to Dr. appointments...gotta fix what's wrong with me.

Labor Day Weekend

A bunch of Sandpeeps are gathering at Sunny Haven for the long weekend. It's warm (87) pool is 85.

Food is being organized 'cause we ARE here to eat and drink.

Bob & Bernie are bringing samples of his own wine.

Tonight is pulled pork, coleslaw, baked beans...and it just gets better all week. Barry (Joey) is going to smoke some ham!

Last year here I did a header out the door of the RV, bruised some ribs and got to play the invalid card for awhile.

This year I truly am an invalid.
Swollen legs and sick all summer long.
Got some heavy duty diuretic from an internist friend of Dr. Bob and am slowly, SLOWLY, getting better.

Bets are being taken as to when I trip over a hose or cord. My legs are still in bad shape so I'm being super careful!

On the Road-July 14

We are roaming around the Black Hills
from campsite to Walmart and back again.

Our GPS quit working, Jim bought a new one at Walmart, then the old one started working again, he took the new one back.

Credit card company thought we were crooks.
  Had to straighten that out.

On the road again toward Custer S.P. You guessed it. The GPS died again. Enough already for today. We found a campsite in Custer...last one in a large CG. By 1 pm it was full.

So I have my nose buried in paper maps, and Jim's ear, the one on my side, apparently doesn't register my speech. So we get lost alot.

Walmart (again) tomorrow. Oh, and it is supposed to rain tomorrow in our favorite place, Spearfish S.D.
(that was sarcasm...we got hail damaged there once).

Plus, he is trying to freeze me out with the AC.

What else can I complain about?
Give me a minute, I'll come up with something.

News From Karen

Just in case you aren't in the habit of checking Karen's notes, here is the latest...

Where is the trash can?

We had the trash can moved over to 306/308 area so that we can get the front gate opened up and the fencing fixed. We hope to have the fencing on the 300 row up by the end of the week and immediately following the front fence area started. Now that we have been almost two weeks with out rain, have had nearly 100′s everyday as well and the wind blew last week from 15 – 30 mph things are finally drying up. Many of the homes here need to be washed down from the green mold. Please coordinate your plans through the office. We want things to get cleaned up and we have a couple of new guys on staff to get the resort clean up in full speed ahead mode. We hope to get the concrete work done as well by the end of the month so that the road work can begin. If you need to discuss any of your site plans, please give us a call. We will try to do our best to be accommodating. The bathhouse floor fix will also happen by the end of the month. That means it will be closed down for a week or so. Details to come as the rest of the plans fall in place. Please watch this Members Only Site.
PS. WE ARE BUSY PUTTING THE CALENDAR TOGETHER…..WE DO HAVE LOTS OF OPENINGS FOR A FUN IDEA FROM YOU. PLEASE GIVE US A CALL AS SANDPIPERS ACTIVITIES ARE THE BEST BECAUSE OF OUR GUESTS. Let’s keep our reputation stellar!!

4th in Kansas

We are celebrating the 4th in Kansas at Prairie Haven.
Gorgeous weather.
Lots of food and fun by the pool.

There was an auction of food and goodies this afternoon and we made a killing on an Amish basket of goodies.

I didn't have a sarong with me...no problem, the office GAVE me one! To Keep! And I love it.

Wifi is strong, TV a bit weak, but not their fault.  Just limited programming.

Rabbits keep running by our RV.

NO BUGS!

And they have the coolest beer cups.  A keg by the pool, with a donation, got you beer til you bloated and white cups that turn blue with cool temps.  How fun!

The Weekend of the 4th of July

We are at Prairie Haven for the weekend.  Lovely...wooded, charming and friendly, and no mosquitos.  We've been here in past years with Phaleta.  She is still remembered fondly as "a great old gal", but hasn't been here for a couple of years...and when her son brought her a few years ago she was unable to participate.
I still miss her.

The weather has been a disappointment to the locals who were looking forward to hot and sunny, with games and fireworks.
It drizzled all night until mid-day, and it is chilly.
Tonight is expected to be 62.
 Sounds good to me!

Oh boy, the sun is out and it is warming up a bit  Gorgeous!

Touring...

We spent the last day or so at Fort Griffin State Historical Park in north Texas. Great little park in the middle of nowhere. About 50 miles east of Abilene on Hwy 283.

Nice RV park, Texas's official herd of longhorns.
Full hookups, affordable. Part of the Texas Trail of forts.

We got to use their golf cart to do our fort tour..lot's of Indian info, buffalo soldiers, fort life.  What a rough life they had. Soldiers got 3 meals a day.  Beef and bread, or bread and beef...every meal.
And when the baker deserted they only got beef.

 Tomorrow,  Prarie Haven in Kansas.

We felt we'd better find a perch for the 4th of July weekend.

Say, is it still raining?
When I check my weather aps it looks ominous!

Once Again, We are On Our Way.

After 4 days in the Hill Country (not a bad gig!) we are, at least after tonight, fixed and on our way.

Mercedes/Benz of Boerne...wow!
What a slick operation.
It is the only Sprinter dealer/repair outside of Houston
(and who needs THAT headache?)

We spent several hours in comfy chairs, served water, coffee, pastries.  They had a cafeteria and bought our lunch.
Surrounded by $100,000-200,000 cars, the view wasn't half bad.

The bill was a bit ouchy, but  had to be done.  They found several issues, fixed them with a smile all the way to the bank.

One of the very nicest things that happened and reinforces our belief the Sandpipers has THE VERY NICEST PEOPLE AROUND! is after reading on the blog that we were marooned in Boerne with tempermental AC (which Jim fixed, thank you God)
Sandi & Brad (#4) called with an invitation to their guest room.  What a wonderful caring gesture!
Although we didn't need it,
I will forever remember their kindness.

Now we head to Iowa to have our hydraulic jacks serviced.
Ahhh...vacation.

We are outa here!

Like rats fleeing a sinking ship, we have left Sandpipers to stew in it's sewage. But we pay...we pay big time!

No turbo boost which Jim feels is a very big deal.
Nobody wants to fix it, so we have ended up in Boerne at a Mercedes-Benz dealer..or will on Monday morn. ( at $40 a night at Alamo Fiesta RV, 4 nights, thank you very much)
while our AC is on the fritz, we are sweating bullets.

Jim has sorta fixed the AC but we now need to find new breakers.

and I hate my haircut!

Latest From the Trenches!

It rains, it pours, it continues...

Yesterday's rain did the bathhouse septic system in.  We are trying to get it fixed, but we can't even get to the tank for all the ground water.  I am putting this out so that you are aware to conserve your water usage because  the septic systems are now maxed out.  The toilets are now shut down at the bathhouse but we have opened the ones in Flip Flopz until the water resides.  Please limit the shower usage as well.  Thank you.  If you have any questions, please give us a call.

FYI:  trying to pump a septic tank with all this ground water is a futile attempt of accomplishing nothing but spending $95 per tank/pump as the ground water runs in fast as we pump it out.  IF (thats a big IF) it does not rain anymore for the next week, we can try to have the pump back out.  I have had a few of you say that you are interested in this service, so I wanted to let you know how much it is and if you want to have your shared tank pumped, you can let the office know.

It Has Happened AGAIN!

Edinburg really got hammered.  The park got another inch or so, but parts of Edinburg got as much as 7 inches in just a few hours.  Seminary Rd. is a nightmare of deep potholes to navigate.
Pumps are at it again, water is under some houses. We are all starting to mold.

And in case you are tardy checking Karen's notes...here you go...

When will the rain stop??

It is so discouraging with this weather. As I am typing it is dark outside and the thunder is again rumbling. All of the work that was going to happen on Thursday was again cancelled. We have the fence contract in place but am still working on the road bids. There is much needed repairs all over the resort and with the one bid in over $300k, you just want to ………
The ditch north of the resort has been dug, but we think they need to get back out there and dig a real ditch, not the little thing they did. In fact we were trying it out yesterday, and the county workers came to the office and asked us to stop because the water berm west of the resort gave way.

With the July 4th weekend just two weeks away, I thought we could have a picnic type lunch on Saturday at noon. We seen a Carls Jr commercial with a “hotdog, hamburger and chips on the sandwich, they called it the All American Burger. So guess what we are serving …..hamburger/hotdog/chips and watermelon. Please bring your beverage and a small side to go with our lunch.
Last Wednesday Tom and Rachel showed up to wash, well on Wednesday night I thought that cursed us as the rain poured down. As a reminder, please have your wash permits in advance. If you need to wash your home because of the green mold, please keep in mind to conserve water as the ground is full and more than likely you are running water over septic field lines that are currently at their max. We want homes to be maintained but with all this water sitting around, it makes our septic systems full.
Also we have had some ask about the water in the bath house. We are in our summer mode where the solar is the heat source. We always turn them on from June 1 to September 1 to keep the bath house cooler as well. One side of the showers tends to be warmer than the other and the “hot” water does not last as long as ten minutes at a time so less water is out in the septic lines during all this rain.
I am trying my best to enjoy life in this weather, sure hope it stops raining so much each time soon.
