Movie Mania Contest

The latest picture of our problem spot shows great improvement. Now on to the:

Rick's sister Pam has taken me up on my request for good movie suggestions, and gone me one better. She has put my scheming little mind onto a contest...a contest with-in a contest, actually.

You must read to the end to find out about the contest:

Here is her email:

++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Reading recent blogs on the movie Mama Mia (loved it! What a delight!) and our Gary's enthusiasm for film reminded me of a little game I've played over the years - that of listing MY FIVE ALL-TIME FAVORITES! Making myself limit the list to five means that I must leave out so many great ones and so many different types of movies. I apparently favor heavy dramas, often with redemption themes, because my present list (oldest to latest) looks like this:

ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST (to remind me that The Hokey Pokey really IS what it's all about)

THE MISSION

LAST OF THE MOHICAN'S (with Daniel Day Lewis running...running....running through my dreams)

DANCES WITH WOLVES (my mom's Indian name is, incidentally, Makes Spaghetti With Peas)

MAN ON FIRE
Please, you movie lovers, share YOUR FAVORITE FIVE!

The recent movie The Love Guru is extremely funny; people of all ages were laughing out loud in the theater both times I went to see it!

Back to me talking, eh, typing..SueZ:

So while entering the pool a couple of days ago, I cornered the movie expert, Gary, and asked him about his all time favorite five. His eyes lit up, rolled around in his head for awhile, then out spewed his list. I committed them to memory, turned away, then was brought back for a little extra tweaking of the list. You'll see why in a moment.

Gary's list:

Matrix (The first one. All were great but the first one, wow! Saw it 27 times)

Alien1 (getting them in the right order was important)

Alien2

Alien3 (Do you see a pattern here?)

The new Batman movie, Dark Knight

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I think my list would be similar to Pam's with the addition of a few older movies.

Saratoga Trunk (Ingrid Bergman & Gary Cooper)

Dances with Wolves (I've seen it probably 8 times...love the soaring music)

Last of the Mohican's (another heart thriller with fab music)

The Great Escape ( I adore all those big name action stars that are no longer with us)

Then you have to list one more...the hardest one. This is the one that stops your list.

I've given it some thought and I can't do it.....there are too many to choose from. Cop out, I know!
+++++++++++++++++++

So, here's the deal. For this blog entry only...send in your comment at the end of this Movie Mania entry and you will be listed on the blog contest sheet. Normally the contestants for the three fabulous, much sought after prizes to be awarded at the first FunBuzz Happy Hour have to come up with a topic...well you've read the sidebars on the left, correct? I don't have to type it all again...read the rules.

These rules are easy.

1. Leave a comment at the end of this blog entry about your 5 favorite movies. Sign with your name, or site number if you are shy.

2. You will then be added to the list of potential winners to be named Nov. 1st.

3. Couples can enter together for one entry, or separately for two entries. Just indicate who is who.

It's hot down here in the Rio Grande Valley. Going to the movies is a great way to cool off.

So entertain us with your movie loves, and get entered into the contest!

Thanks Mariana, You have another entry on the contest list.

I asked Jim about his favorite movies. He got a pained look. His favorite movie is usually the last one he saw, but after much soul searching he came up with the Star Wars series and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. He,we, aren't eligible for the contest, but it's still interesting to see which movies made an impression.

Far be it from me to dis a fellow Joker players movie choices, but Jay, this is the most gawdawful movie list I have ever seen! Worse than Gary's! But I am starting to understand and see a pattern here. Any guys willing to list, oh, I don't know...Breakfast at Tiffany or Love Story or Under the Tuscan Sun?

Ok! Ok! I'll bite and submit some of my favourites. I am not a movie fan and very rarely will I watch a movie beginning to end. However some I have watched more than once and still enjoy them.

1. Tom Jones: a bawdy 1960's movie of Henry Fieldings classic 18th century novel, with Albert Finney in the lead role. It is probably the most humourous movie I have ever watched.

2 Casablanca; I do not think I need to explain this one. It is, inspite of some hokey acting, an all time classic.

3 Valmont: This a French movie of the very famous French novel Dangerous Liasons. A super tight story line with no obvious end.

4 First Blood: A good old fashioned action movie, in which I relish the punishment handed out to the uniformed thugs.

5. Basic Instinct: Another movie with a tight story line and excellent acting without an obvious conclusion.

If you will allow I'd add a 6th movie, The Seven Samurai. This is the original to the Magnificent Seven, except it is an old movie with somewhat hokey acting and of course it is in Japanese. To my way of thinking it portrays more vividly than The M7 the plight of ordinary citizens at the hands of the ruthless, thugs or politicians, and really echoes the cry down the centuries of a need for a King Arthur, Robin Hood or Batman!

Enjoy your favorites and relish the taste it gives you.

OK, OK, I have a list - may not be my all-time favorites, but more like a list of good movies that my memory can recall:

Day of the Jackal (the original about an assassination attempt on Charles de Gaulle)
The Good, the Bad & the Ugly
The Italian Job (the original with Michael Caine)
Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid
Papillon
MASH
Raiders of the Lost Arc
The Graduate

OK I know that is more than 5 but I put down extras in case other memories aren't any good either!

And just for Suez, I suppose a couple of not bad movies include Out of Africa and War of the Roses.

If this list shows up twice, it's just my luddite approach to this process (I screwed up)

1. Bull Durham
2. Notorious (Htichcock, Bergman, Cooper, this one doesn't get the press of Casablanca but is at least as good)
3. Blazing Saddles (my kids moved away from me in the theater because my guffawing embarassed them)
4. Phaedra (Anthony Perkins, Melina Mecouri, the first "foreign film" I saw, and I saw it in a theater in Windsor, Ontario full of Greeks who howled at the untranslated chatter of the extras)
5. Breaking Away (I was living in DC and so homesick for midwestern scenery and values, I took my kids to see it twice. They weren't so dazzled.)
