The March SandPiper Sun is Online!

Go to the Sandpiper website, http://sandpipersresort.com/ , click on "news", enter the passwords (email me, I'll tell you) click on the month of your choice, and read all about it.
There is a new section with things for sale, mostly lots , RV's, improvements...but you can put in other things, too. Bicycles, extra recliner...that kind of thing.

Wasn't last nights New Owl initiation done well?

I loved the questions.

Dennis questioned the newbies first about their general knowledge of the park "who's", then turned the tables and quizzed the audience about their knowledge of the fledglings.

Eye-opening!

It was a wonderful way to get a flash course on new friends.
Everything from The United Nations dining to Carnegie Hall to chase crew for a hot air balloon!
There was inspiring information, creepy stuff, too (Son of Sam!) and everything in between.
What a great new class of Owls!
Welcome to the nest.
Find your eggs yet?

Shades of Marie Laveau's Ghost!!!!

I hope you enjoyed the Mardi Gras Parade yesterday. Even though we were delayed by a week to accommodate all the fun the Olympics had to offer, I think we captured the spirit of Mardi Gras...and the spirit of dear departed Marie Laveau.

The wake was, to borrow a much used OWL term, a hoot!

Many mourners paid their respects to dear Marie,
but none had more fun than the Crypt-Kicker Five.

Joe & Jim & John
Sue & Sue

The two Sue's paid our respects to Marie in true Sandpiper fashion, by belting out a song.
The ghoulish guys showed their deep mourning by becoming demented cheerleaders.
I think the make-up really captured their inner quality, don't you?
Somehow words fail me at this moment......

Burgers are Back!

It was just too hectic during The Food Olympics, oh, excuse me,
The Nude Olympics, to do the Bodacious Burger Cook-off.
It kinda got upstaged by the delicious goodies from the Afternoon Tea
and the robust flavors of the Chili Contest, not to mention the pool-side lunches,
grill night and...oh, yes...The Showdown at the Pavilion Corral Masterpiece Theater.
So...
We will try again.
I was gonna make a Bratwurst Slider. Ground turkey spiced up like
bratwurst and served on a bun with a dill pickle and sauerkraut.
Sounds good, yes?
But no.
I promised Jay that I would clog his arteries big time.
I am making the Jay Burger.
So my Bratwurst Slider recipe is up for grabs.
Anyone want it? I even have the little sign printed up for the table.
First one that asks gets my treasured heirloom recipe
(actually I've never made it but it sounds pretty good).
Roy has been searching the web for interesting burger ideas.
Epicurious has a bunch of good recipes.
I did a blog advertising the postponed contest in early February.
Look at it. It has a bunch of ideas, including the Australian prediliction for beets on their burgers.
I would really like to try that.
So break out your thinking caps and sign up for this cook-off.
We need at least a dozen chefs for it to work.
I'm putting the poster and sign-up sheet in the pavilion today.
Do it!

Fire Safety Class

Q: What can save lives & property & costs under $25.00?
A: A portable fire extinguisher!
Think of all the ways we use fire....cooking, inside and outside, candles
Jeesh, think of the number of candles on most of our cakes....
Most of us have one or more extinguishers in our homes & vehicles.
If we own an RV, an extinguisher or two came with it.
They can be very effective at stopping fires in the early stages if applied correctly.
Typically however, once we’ve acquired them, and perhaps read the instruction
card that came with the extinguisher, we tend to “file & forget” the details.
Unlike first aid & CPR training, it’s pretty difficult to obtain any extinguisher training, let alone have the opportunity to actually use one to extinguish a fire in a supervised training exercise.

Accordingly, Jay & Karen are sponsoring just such an opportunity on Wednesday, March 11th here at Sandpipers Resort.

We will be conducting a live-fire extinguisher training class here on our grounds.

The Edinburg Fire Department will be conducting the training, and a local fire extinguisher company will “rent” us the extinguishers to use.

Karen & Jay will fund this really exceptional opportunity, & we urge everyone to attend. Approximately 20 of us will be able to extinguish a controlled fire.

Whether we are the one using the extinguisher, or simply observing, it will be hugely

It's all contingent on wind & weather; if the 11th is a red flag or no burn day, we will have to abort.

Rescheduling from a practical point will be Nov or Dec. probably.

So, please mark your calendars for 9:00AM, Wednesday March 11th, and take advantage of a
great opportunity to learn more about safety preparedness.

Last Call For Recipes & Golf Cart Hysteria!

The Cook Book committee is meeting this week to get our Memory Cookbook organized and sent to the publisher.
THIS WEEK, SandPeeps!
How many of you have promised us and yourselves that you would get "that" recipe" to us, and forgotten?
Where are all the great chili recipes? Not just the winning ones from Sharon, Sharon, Sherry & Larry, Chili Chefs Extraordinary
but all the chili's 'cause they were all somebodies favorite. And where are the recipes for those fantabulous Afternoon Tea goodies. There were some mighty tasty morsels on those doily decorated plates.
I want 'em!
Bring your recipes to today's FunBuzz, or give them to Sue P #37, Sue Z #38, Louise # 428, Donna #221, or Lisette #15...
before Thursday, March 5.
Hand written on a scrap of paper is fine. And maybe jot down a little something about the recipe, say, if it won a gold medal at the 2009 Chili Cook Off, for instance.
I'm asking you. I implore you. I'm begging you. Don't make me grovel.
************
*******
Dave #211 sent me the hilarious results of the
first Sandpiper Golf Cart Races.
I would have been there except for bowling in the AM
and the Scrabble tournament in the afternoon.
Even tho it was record HOT, it sounded just great.

Others entered, but did not run.

The rules were changed in mid-day to give everyone two chances, not just those who were disqualified on their first run. The “best of two” became official.

Thanks to all participants and helpers. Perhaps next year will run more smoothly.
This event had its “first-year” growing pains, but it was still a lot of FUN-FUN-FUN!

Next year I want to try it!
