Flood info from John P.

Facebook has a whole lot of info on this problem but if you don't do Facebook this should catch you up.

Good morning. I have enough information to write a thesis at this point, but I think it is better to go at this chronologically by important date sequences.

This Summer, with everyone's help, Karen and Jay were able to get the County to enter SPR(private property) to help with water removal, with their big pumps. That was a significant accomplishment, and was a first step with improving our relationship with Raul Sesin, the general manager(head guy) with the Hidalgo County Drainage Department for our District, #1.

He toured SPR at the high flood point, and with the adverse publicity we generated, agreed, reluctantly, to help. He verbally said they expect to start in January, with drainage improvements which will help protect SPR in the future, and he estimated it would be an 18 month project.

I could go into many details on this, but that is not what is important today. What's important today is that everyone fully understands what the meeting tonight at Edinburg's City Hall is all about. This is just one of many SALES MEETINGS the district is currently putting on, all over District #1, to encourage likely voters to vote YES for the $190 Million Bond referendum, which is on the ballot for the 11/6/2018 election. If approved, the County will have more money, if the bonds are sold, to move further ahead with about 34 identified drainage improvement projects throughout Hidalgo County.

One of these projects is called the Faysville Drain, which conceivably will affect us in a positive way. The estimated amount allocated for this project is $6,902,445. The other projects are spread throughout Hidalgo County.

Tonight's meeting is NOT A BITCH SESSION for recent flooding! Indeed, if someone from SPR tries to interrupt their presentation and starts complaining, it will only makes things worse for SPR and it's relationship with the County. There is a time, place, and methodology for doing that skillfully and appropriately, and you can rest assured it's being addressed presently. When you have money and politics involved, it's very complicated, and takes some knowledge, patience, and time. And remember, this recent, intense, and continuous flooding is somewhat new to us, and even though we have experienced flooding in the past. However, it has never been like this, involving the whole area, before. So tonight, if you attend, I, LD and many others plead that you just listen and understand what they are attempting to accomplish: a YES vote on the referendum for more money.

IF, I REPEAT, IF there is a question/answer period after their presentation, more detail about the Faysville Drain may logically come up, as this meeting is being held in the City Hall of Edinburg, and this is just about the closest proposed project to City Hall.

Any other questions, please call either LD or myself, or whoever. LD and I may have the most "hands-on" experience with this type of thing, as a result of our mutual backgrounds and prior experience. We'll talk about the effectiveness, or lack thereof, of what the County is currently doing for SPR in the days ahead.

Hamburger marathon

We have returned home to a bit of a mess.  Have to replace our ac ducts as they have water inside them, had to get Direct Tv to fix our thingamajig 'cause it got flooded, have an insurance adjuster here tomorrow to look over the joint...but most places had much more damage than we did.

As for the Hamburger Marathon...
Whataburger didn't make the cut.  Well, it is just a fast food, on the go, eat when you have no choice, kind of place.

Guess I'll have to keep trying.

june Escape

Jim and I have spent the last several weeks at daughter Melinda's Flower Mound house (just a skosh north of DFW airport). Sister Patti came for a visit and we have been eating and (them) drinking. Melinda made me take out "to excess".

Also  we are doing a hamburger marathon to find the bestest hamburger ever.  So far we tried the All American at Twisted Root, and at Jake's a dbl cheeseburger with bacon.  So far Jake's has an edge for table service and tater tots, but both were amazing. Both basically the same burger and Twisted Root is just so darn cute.
Still have to try Snuffers. I should have taken pictures but we always remember when the food is gone.

We are going back for Sushi, this time with Jim, and I want a really good pizza.

We have been swimming everyday, and I apologise for rubbing your noses in it 'cause of Sandpipers flood. We are leaving here July 4th and will join you all in flooded misery.

Thank You from Karon J.

Thank you for your good wishes

Steve and I have been to MD Anderson in Houston to get a second opinion on how to treat my colorectal cancer. Although this has been a long week with the driving and the doctor’s appointments we feel that we have a good idea of what treatments will be necessary to get to a positive outcome.

The next few months are going to be focused on doctors and chemo and radiation. Sometime in late summer or early fall I will face some major surgery followed by more chemo.

Being sick sucks, but the people in this park make the process of getting well easier because of the support given without being asked. I know that we have been surrounded by the good and positive thoughts and wishes and prayers and we want to thank all of the Sandpeeps. Ya’ll are the best!!!

Most people don’t know that back in 1912, Hellmann’s mayonnaise was manufactured in England. In fact, the Titanic was carrying 12,000 jars of the condiment scheduled for delivery in Vera Cruz, Mexico, which was to be the next port of call for the great ship after its stop in New York.

This would have been the largest single shipment of mayonnaise ever delivered to Mexico. But as we know, the great ship did not make it to New York. The ship hit an iceberg and sank, and the cargo was forever lost.

The people of Mexico, who were crazy about mayonnaise, and were eagerly awaiting its delivery, were disconsolate at the loss. Their anguish was so great, that they declared a National Day of Mourning, which they still observe to this day.

The National Day of Mourning occurs each year on May 5th and is known, of course, as Sinko de Mayo.

City Nature Challenge

Four days in April, the 27 - 30 we are trying to document as many
animal/plant species as we can find in the RGV.

You don't have to know what you are reporting, someone else will figure that out. If you take a picture with the camera on your phone and then send it via the iNaturalist app or (iNaturalist.org for computers) you will be adding to our list of documented species.

Even if you and I know this is a common sight in the RGV, take a picture of it and send it in.  We are competing against a number of other cities to see who has the greatest rate of participation, the largest number of observations and the greatest number of species identified.

Join in and help the RGV win this thing.

To count for the contest all observations (pictures) must be made on those four days.  Do a practice report or two just to see how it all works, then save the rest of your searching and reporting for April 27 - 30!

Need help?
Talk to Tom Butler, Lot 44.

Permit Information for Sandpipers Residents.

Recently there has been a number of violations of the "permit" rule so I'd like to explain it more thoroughly.

There are still water conservation edicts in place so make sure you apply to the office for permits so we can scatter times
to preserve water pressure.
Permits required for:
Washing RV's, cars, houses, pets.
No permit required for washing bicycles.

Also notice to the office required for planting, in the ground,  anything near your house/RV.  We are trying to prevent termite infestation and snakes.  No creeping plants, no plants near the fence line.  Exceptions granted for containers holding artificial soil.

No plastic flowers, statues or garden ornaments including gnomes and other fantasy themes.  Permit required for any garden water feature.

Permits also required for wearing clothing during warm weather.  This is a nudist park!

All golf carts, cars and motorcycles/bicycles MUST be retrofitted with a speed limiting device preset at 10 mph, available at the office for a reasonable fee.

And please register your smart phone with the office. Problems have arisen because of some phones ability to take pictures, so once a month bring your phone to the office so a staff member can verify your compliance with our "no pictures" rule.

Thank you in advance for your continued cooperation.

The Wind Wins Again!!

The forecast for tomorrow, Tuesday, March 27, calls for another windy March day, much like today.

It's not fun to ride for a distance in this wind.  We have several of our riders out for health reasons and several more with equipment problems so we will not ride bicycles at Laguna Atascosa tomorrow, March 27.

We have one remaining bicycle ride scheduled for this year.
Next week, April 3 we will ride the McAllen Walking and Bicycle trail which extends along second street from I-2, US 83 to the northern end of Col. Rowe Boulevard, 2nd street.

We can ride a distance that suits the group on this out and back ride.  The Bicycle trail is safely away from traffic except at the crossings.  This is a very picturesque ride with a good surface and safe crosswalks when crossing traffic is necessary.  The trail parallels the irrigation canal so there are few crossroads.

Lunch will be at Gatti's Pizza at Nolana and 2nd Street.
We eat lunch during the ride so bring a bicycle lock to secure your bike during lunch.

Bicycle rides at led by Tom & Louise Butler

Bicycle Ride Cancelled for Today

Once again we are canceling a bicycle ride.  Today's weather forecast for Port Isabel, on the coast just south of Laguna Atascosa, calls for winds from the north at 25 to 30 miles per hour during the morning.  The scenic loop at Laguna Atascosa is on the coast for about 6 of the 14 miles and the other 8 miles are inland but there are no trees to slow the wind.  This would make the ride very strenuous, not the enjoyable ride we want.  Our make-up day for this ride is next Tuesday, March 27.

Chili Cook-Off

Marilynn - #12

Thanks to each of you who have entered the chili cook off.

Beyond my wildest expectations twelve
Sandpeeps have stepped up to the plate.

If dishes I have tasted before from these cooks are any indication the judges are going to have a tough time.
All participants will be recognized at the super happy hour
on 3/28 along with the judges and
we will award 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place.

Then we get to eat up whatever is left along with all the other amazing dishes you guys always bring to the party. Maybe some cheese, crackers, onions, corn chips, and whatever else goes with chili should also be in order.

See you on the 28th.

Bicycle Ride Canceled

Our bicycle ride tomorrow at Port Isabel is canceled.

Cool weather and Texas Week (Spring Break) are two factors that lead to his cancellation.

Our ride is on city streets and Texas Week does
mean increased traffic.

Our next bicycle ride is Laguna Atascosa which is our longest ride.
We'll hope for better weather on the 20th for that ride.

Chili Cook-Off Contest

From Marilynn - Site 12
Chili Cook-off
We have many wonderful cooks here at Sandpipers and as part of the Olympic closing ceremonies we will give you the chance to showcase your talent. All you need to do is make your best chili and give it a name.

No restrictions, make it the way you like it.

We have a panel of four distinguished judges that will judge the entries and pick the best of the best.

All participants will be recognized and the winners announced at the Olympic closing ceremonies on March 28.

Karen has generously donated prize money for first, second, and third place and Buddy and I will donate a gift to all entries.
I will need your entry information
no later than Friday, March 16.
Give me your name, site number, and the name of your chili.
You can text/call me at 817-874-3723, e-mail buddyls@swbell.net, or just come see me at site 12.

Once I have all the entries we will get together
and talk about the judging process.
Once the judges have done their thing, remaining chili will be served at the super happy hour
following the closing ceremony.

Karen had a great idea about how to taste all the chili.
Bring yourself a small, six space muffin tin.
We hear they are available at the dollar store.
This is going to be a lot of fun and the more participation the better. I look forward to hearing from you so step on up there.
