To get things rolling I'm putting up a poll on RV preferences. Participate why dontcha!
From Ian & Terry
As we will be setting up a winter home at Sandpiper’s next fall, Terry & I are looking for the advice of other residents. We are “NEWBIE’S” in a couple of life experiences:
Ø Living in an area that is prone to hurricanes, tornadoes and flooding.
So we are soliciting, and would heartily welcome, any advice that other residents of Sandpiper’s would be prepared to share with us on topics such as:

Ø Living in an area that is prone to hurricanes, tornadoes and flooding.
So we are soliciting, and would heartily welcome, any advice that other residents of Sandpiper’s would be prepared to share with us on topics such as:
Ø The best place in the RGV to purchase a RV, and what features we should look for or avoid in an RV based on your living experience (or perhaps some of you have an RV on site that might be of interest to us);
Ø The best place to purchase RV insurance, and what types of policy features we should look for or avoid;
Ø What we should do in setting up the RV to make it as secure as possible from natural disasters (particularly while we are away in the summer);
Ø How to avoid problems with rodents, insects and other critters which may make Sandpiper’s their home as well; and
Ø Any other advice that comes to mind regardless of how trivial it may seem to you – it is all new to us.
We will talk to many of you when we get there, but meanwhile please feel free to post your comments on the blog, or e-mail us at ianhowes@telus.net. Thank you, and look forward to meeting all of you next fall!

Ian and Terry, First welcome to our family.
Jim & I gave away our RV several years ago when we realized we didn't want to be anywhere except here, at Sandpipers. So no current RV advise. However...we have lived in the Gulf region for 25 years. My advise is:
Wear cotton when you wear anything, drink water, siesta in the mid-day sun, play water volleyball to stay cool, Wear shoes in the grass, when they say the hurricane has become a 3, head north.
You'll LOVE it here!
Hello: Just a word or two. If you can "try out" some loaners/renter unit try that. A pull behind is good if you have the vehicle to pull it and don't mind it behind you. A class C is good but how much time will you have to live in it sooooooooooooo close together. A class A is great but big to move and usually you have to pull a car. We have a great Class A sitting in the storage unit as we decided after buying it to get a mobile there in Sandpipers. Depends on your lifestyle. Welcome to the resort, looking forward to seeing you.
Terry and Ian welcome to Sandpipers. We have had both a fifth wheel and a travel trailer. They both now come with slide outs that dramaticly increase the living area. They both allow you to park the trailer/5th wheel and use the tow vehicle for shopping sight seeing etc. We found that the 5th wheel was much easier to tow and back into a camping spot. With a fifth wheel you should try as much as possible to get a pull through spot at a campground you intend to stay. This is not always possible.
Welcome to Sandpipers. To answer your question, I must ask one. How do you intend to use the RV? My advise will be drastically different if you are going to park it and leave it all year rather than traveling in it from place to place. A single level bumper pull model with slide outs should prove to be the best if you intend to leave it here, If you are going to travel with it, then I strongly recommend a Class A as they are much easier to set up after arriving at a camp site. I hope this helps.

Hi:
Tom asked the right question. How doyou intend to use it? If you are going to pak and leave it in Sandpipers then a large 5th wheel or trailer, with slide outs will be the most economical. We have a 40ft diesel pusher and a small toad; this combo we love and live in it full time, but when the time comes to stay in one spot we may well opt for a 5th wheel. I love driving this rig, but I do avoid small roads and diesel stops,also since you cannot back up with a car hooked up you have to be dead certain of where you ae going especially around campgrounds and truck stops and small towns. We also avoid places like Walmart and Cracker barrel as these can be nightmares with a full size rig and toad.
Best of luck.
