Bicycle Ride, Tuesday Feb. 27

Our bicycle ride was canceled last Tuesday
because of the windy weather.
This week we will try again.  We meet at the Sandpipers gate,
park along main street (in front of Pizzaz) before 9:00.
We will be out the gate at 9:00 and will caravan to our ride site.

Mission, Texas was named for the mission established in the area by Rene Guyard, a French Merchant.  He later ceded the mission to the Oblate priests.  La Lomita Mission is just south of town along the river.  The only thing remaining of the old mission is the chapel and a stone oven.

We will park our cars there, explore the grounds and then ride to
Anzalduas County Park.  This park is on the south side of the Rio Grande River.  Yes, the south side.  The river makes a loop and you will be standing on the banks of the river looking north into Mexico.  Also at this park is Anzaldaus Dam which serves as a power generation dam for Mexico and a flood control dam for both countries.  We will ride through
park and then return to La Lomita Mission.

Roads are lightly traveled in the area.  We will ride over two levees, one on the floodway is a long pull uphill but can be walked if you aren't up to pedaling that climb.  We will see some Border Patrol activity in the area possibly  including some awesome boats they use to patrol the Rio Grande in that area.

Following the ride we will have lunch at
Danny's Restaurant in Mission.

You are welcome to join us for lunch or go it on your own.

Bicycle Ride for Tuesday February 20 - Cancellation

After battling the wind at the golf course Monday, we are going to
cancel the bicycle ride scheduled for Tuesday, February 20.
The wind forecast for Tuesday differs from today's conditions only in not mentioning the 35 mile per hour gusts.  Wind speeds are forecast to be 20 to 25 MPH.

The make-up day for this ride is Tuesday, February 27 and right now the forecast for that day looks much better.  We'll send out a reminder as the 27th approaches.

Bicycle Ride-Feb 6

Weather looks perfect for our bicycle ride on Tuesday.
We canceled last week due to cold weather.

This week, February 6, is our make-up day for the canceled ride to the Hidalgo Pump House. Come ride with us, explore the area along the border where Hidalgo County gets its
irrigation water from the Rio Grande.

The Old Hidalgo Pump House is the initial irrigation pump for the Rio Grande Valley.  The Old Pump House has theoriginal boilers and stack, and many of the engines that drove the pumps
in the early days of irrigating the Rio Grande Valley.

We ride a short ride along the input canal, the border fence, and the levee overlooking the storage reservoir.

The ride is less than three miles and is mostly level with interesting scenery, some wildlife and great fresh air.

Lunch is planned at the Republic of the Rio Grande, an excellent outdoor dining venue if weather permits.
Otherwise we'll dine inside and enjoy the decor.

We depart the Sandpipers gate at 9:00 a.m.
on Tuesday, February 6.
