Reminder Time....

In case you don't know, Happy Hour starts at 4pm....
and it's always 4 o'clock somewhere....
++++++++++++++++++++
Oh, and though I missed it, there was some excitement
just outside our fence yesterday.
I don't have all the facts, so if you know more, do tell....
but...
apparently our due south neighbors tried smoking out some bees near our fence line and the fire got away from them.
Karen, Mel (old Mel! No, not THAT old Mel, the other old Mel), Tony and a host of helpers sprayed water, called 911, listened for fire trucks and generally controlled what could have been a disaster.
Not to worry.
All is fine.
No damage to us other than some frayed nerves.
+++++++++++++++
Come to Super Happy Hour and get the rest of the story...if there is one???

Surprise Party

Were you able to attend Tony's surprise birthday party last night?
I hope so.
It was an EVENT!
And I think between Sherry's planning and with the kidnap help of Jay & Karen they actually did pull off a surprise! There were burgers and dogs (not Asia & Koda)...
here is a photo of Guido flipping burgers. and tons of delicious food on the buffet....oh, and rivers of beer, too.
See how tan we all are?

One of the hi-lites of the evening was a fashion show of some of Tony's more memorable creations, by some of Tony's more fashionable friends.

This photo wasn't them....but it gives you the idea......maybe.
All in all, a magical evening.

Light breeze, mild temps, caged birds twittering in the trees...magical!

To close I'll share the poem I enclosed with the bready gift Jim & I gave him.

(I owe Tony lots of bread 'cause he helped us so much with the landscape project in front of our house...pulling out the bougainvilleas, hauling away rocks, filling in with dirt and sod....I owe him lots of bread.)

Here tis:

Tony, Tony, you're full of baloney.
Oh wait. This is bread.
*
Fred, Fred, you're full of bread,
Oh, wait, you're name is Tony.
Hmmmm....
*
How's this?
Tony, Tony, you're 55,
Thank the Lord you're still alive.
Yes, that rhymes.

Temporary Closure

The Club Room and the KK
(That's my shorthand for the Kurtain Korner)
are temporarily closed due to construction. The Club Room will be bigger and better than ever,
and KK is getting flooring and curtains.
Target date for completion is next Wed,
Oct 27...but of course that depends on how smoothly everything goes.
So if you play...
Texas 42 (Monday's 2pm)
or
Domino's (Monday's 7pm)
or
Canasta (Wed's 1:30)
or
Scrabble (Tuesday's & Friday's 2pm)
or
Street Spanish (Tues 7:30pm)
or anything else that would take place in either the Club Room or KK
you will still play, but you'll be in the pavilion.
Hang in there.....

Help Needed....

Bill & Monique have been the Junque & Java coffee mavens for years.
As you may already know Monique is unable to be with us this year and Bill could really use some help in setting up the coffee urns... and cleaning up afterwards.
Four extra hands (translate that to two peeps) will go a long way towards an uninterrupted flow of caffeine...so necessary on those chilly early mornings
.
This is an easy, once-a-month event...so if you can help talk to Jon #221 or Bill #8.
Your help will be greatly appreciated!
******************
*************
And speaking of help....
Jon
(the great h-less one)
needs helpers for the Harvest Pot Luck Dinner Tuesday, Oct.19!
That is in two...2...dos...days, but who's counting?
Four Peeps, perhaps two couples? are needed to help
set up tables and serving areas...
Bus the tables....
and clean up and wash dishes afterward.
HELP!
Talk to Jon immediately!
He's usually at Happy Hour, playing volleyball or at his site #221.
Sounds like he leads a leisurely life doesn't it?

Call it Soda, Call it Pop,

Whatever you call those frosty cans, the fridge in the hallway outside the pavilion
is now stocked with bottles of water and cans of soda-pop.
So if you are thirsty help yourself, but remember....

HONOR SYSTEM PAYMENT

The price is a very reasonable $.50

*******************

And we now have a name for the dance floor, curtained off area of the pavilion...

The Kurtain Korner.

This area will be used for such diverse gatherings as Street Spanish lessons

(The first class was a HUGE success!)

and whatever else needs a little separation from the hoi polloi.

Good fun and good exercise. Please pass the word around camp.

Request
Sandy of Sandy and Dave (# 48), and I (Harry #33)
work at a middle school in Edinburg.
She volunteers one day of the week and I substitute teach there when called.
I have also volunteered there many times.
Now to what I need for the school.
All I need are magazines for the library as they have no budget for periodicals.
The magazines cannot contain anything of a sexual nature,
this is a middle school after all.
My thanks in advance.
It is something we can do to help the kids.

The Hazlett's...still on the road!

Dear friends.

Bill and I are still on the road, enjoying our time together before he starts work next week in Dothan, AL.

A few more memories to share from Lake Powell

Sometimes we could not tell up from down...the lake as still as a mirror!

Navigating the narrows to Rainbow Bridge.
Bill and I at Rainbow Bridge, absolutely indescribable.
Our own private beach, surrounded by 400 ft cliffs.
It is noodling time at the Lake, after hiking the beach we needed to cool down.
Then a run to the hot tub to warm up and another day, another happy hour!
Our last sunset, so long to Lake Powell
We have had warm days and cool nights, blue skies and rainbows.

We hope all your travels are filled with great memories. We miss you all, take care, God Bless and we will see you in November.

More Later.

Spanish Class Begins......

Street Spanish
Now don't get your panties in a twist! Just 'cause you aren't here yet doesn't mean you are missing out on Street Spanish lessons.
**
Terri (#415) is going to get started this Tuesday (Oct 12) at 7:30 PM in the pavilion, but these lessons will be very informal.
You will be able to step into any class at any time.
While you catch up the earlier students will get refresher lessons....
win/win for everybody.
**
The classes will be, oh, maybe an hour long.
The plan is to begin with alphabet pronunciation and progress from there.
Terri asks 'If you have a particular request on what you want to learn, tell her.'
Like if you want to read the billboards in McAllen...
or understand the novellas on TV...
or shop for bargains in Progresso.
****
By the way....
the corner of the pavilion...
where this class will be held...
the powers-that-be are planning to install
sliding curtains to make it somewhat more private.
We need a name for this nook.
The SandPeep Retreat?
The Naked Nook?
Nude Niche?
This isn't a contest, just asking for ideas.

The Golfers Amongst Us....

Dakota Bill (Laura), #428, Tom and Louise Butler, #44, are serving as
marshals for the LPGA Navistar Golf Classic sponsored by Monaco RV this
week in Prattville, Alabama. Over 100 Monaco Coaches are parked near
the entrance to the course with ours among them. Navistar/Monaco RV
offered this golf tournament and rally at no cost!

We signed up to help with the tournament on Thursday morning as soon as
we found out they still needed volunteers. We start at 6:30 a.m. and
our day ends about 6:30 p.m. For $30 we got a hat, shirt and a chance
to get inside the ropes to assist with the tournament. Bill and Tom
paid an additional $30 to be able to play the tournament course
following the tournament. The Senator at Prattville is part of the
Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail.

The field was cut to 62 players Thursday evening and the finals are take
place Saturday and Sunday. The highlights of the tournament are being
broadcast on the Golf Channel from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. Central Time each
evening with a repeat at 1:00 a.m. There are also news highlights
periodically on the Golf Channel. Look for us, we're the ones with the
signs that say, "Hush Y'all."Our assignments vary daily. So far Bill has been assigned to the 7th
tee while Tom and Louise have assignments on the 12th tee, 9th tee and
green. We've had brief conversations with the ladies and enjoyed
watching some tremendous golfers. I'm sure we'll all be playing much
improved golf this year!

Bill has a signed golf ball from one of the ladies. Tom and Louise are
hoping! We're also playing a version of fantasy golf among ourselves.
So far, Louise has us all beat by a long shot. On Thursday she had the
top three golfers. Thursday she had players at first, second and
tenth. The winner gets $10 from each of the other players (3) and then
buys lunch for everyone at Dairy Queen!
Submitted by Tom Butler, Friday, October 8, 2010.

Construction Delays

Those Sandpeeps that use highway Texas 285 between Riviera (US 77) to Falfurias (US 281) may want to consider an alternative as Texas 285 is under construction and down to one lane.
Traffic is moving under convoy.
You can expect delays of about 30 minutes.
Alternate routes include Texas 141 at Kingsville or FM 490 at Raymondville to US 281.

Happy Trails

I Has a Bone to Pick Wiff You!

A timely message from Kathie, #106
******************
As you know I have 2 new puppies.
With the influx of everyone coming back for the winter, it is important to explain to folks that the best way to greet someone else's dog.

For my dogs I would prefer, no talk, no touch, no eye contact until I give permission. My dogs tend to be excited aggressive.
They love people and other dogs.
However, when you start talking, touching and looking at my dog in that state of mind, it is giving my dogs positive re-enforcement to that behavior.
I am trying to break them of that behavior.
I am working toward their behavior being calm submissive.
Having a balanced dog is the best goal for the dog.
The dogs want balance and need it.
Raising the balanced dog to live in this community is important.
Yes, I myself have been excited to meet the different dogs and have inappropriately spoke, touched or looked at the dog before the dog is calm.
I am raising my dog the Dog Whisperer way.
I am setting discipline, boundaries, and limitations for my dogs.
I am the "pack leader".

Here is an explanation from Cesar Milan's book, "How to Raise the Perfect Dog".

Socializing your dog to people should begin from the first moment you arrive at your home. All members of our family or community, need to understand how to greet the dogs and how to share calm-assertive energy. Dogs are not toys but living beings and in order to acclimate them to their environment people need to refrain from showering them with all the affection and excitement people feel. Dogs respond to energy. This community needs to practice no touch, no talk no eye contact. Instead, they should quietly allow the dogs to smell them, then let the primary caretaker give permission when the dog is calm. Dogs need to associate calmness not excitement.

People think: "Oh, she's so mean. We can't play with the dogs." People don't think about what is the best thing for the dog. That's why the shelters are packed. People create a dog that's out of control, then they don't want them anymore.
Coming on too strong to a timid or insecure dog can intimidate them, and such affronts, if repeated can create a dog that is either too shy or fearful or worse, fearfully aggressive. This can lead to a bite, and the tendency to blame the dog for being aggressive. On the other hand, an outgoing, active dog may tempt to play too vigorously, raising the dogs level of excitement to an intensity that may be hard to temper as the get older. It's all about prevention
.

Tips to greeting dogs: Turn all of your attention to the owner. No speaking, touching or eye contact to the dogs. Give the dog time to sniff and calm down. Allow the owner to signal when you can do the speaking, touching and looking at the dogs. If folks want to give a treat to your dog, make sure the get the owner's permission. Some dogs have sensitive stomachs and digestive issues. Some folks limit the amount of food their dogs receive to prevent obesity and further health issues. I am proud of my dogs. They are pretty well behaved, but, the bad behaviors can be learned quickly.

I feel with the beginning of the season, that it is important that these tips be shared so no one is offended by an owner trying to train their dog.
Thanks,
Kathie 106

The Dog Whisperer is on the National Geographic Channel
