Veteran's Day

It's hard for me to write this as I was not in attendance, but I've heard so many glowing reports it is worth noting on the specialness...is that a word?...of this event.

Jim & I could not be there but had timed our return to the park so as not to interfere with the ceremony.
We miscalculated...along with several other peeps.
We all queued outside the fence, waiting, and wishing we were inside with everyone.

After the ceremony was over we heard such accolades, such glowing enthusiasm about the Veteran's Day ceremony that I figured it was certainly worth a mention here.

Forgive me if I miss a step here or there...remember, I wasn't there.

Barry...you did an absolutely masterful job of organizing everything. And Thank you for remembering Bev.

Karon...women in military roles should never be/will never be overlooked.

Louise...a wonderfully stirring poem.

Stan...The Tootsie Roll Patrol....why doesn't everyone know of this?

Steve....you pulled it all together with great technical expertise.

Jay & Karen, a rousing thank you for helping develop this amazing Flag Garden of Memories.

But What Do I Know?

Karen & Jay have turned a nice RV park into a gorgeous destination resort.  It is just beautiful everywhere…OK maybe not the pot-holed roads near the front office, but everywhere else.  I am proud to live here.
However…
There are problems with water volleyball.  I’m sure they will be worked out eventually but here is some feedback:
A few players have had real trouble with the floor surface of the volleyball pool to the point of dripping blood from shredded toes onto the concrete.
Some can’t play at all because of the no-shoes rule, for a variety of reasons.
Some can’t play in the sun for extended periods due to skin cancer concerns.  My dermatologist is horrified over the “no skin protection shirts” rule.  I have had several chest and back cancers removed and don’t want any more…and those shirts are designed for water use, do not shed, and will not clog filters.  Yes, yes I know…nudist park.  But this is SOUTH TEXAS peeps and I am not stupid.
And League play…really?
Where is the fun to get clobbered by a hand picked,  super strong team?
But what do I know?
And while I am on a rant.
Somewhere in this lovely park is a self appointed Gestapo type who is looking for rule infractions then scurrying, rat-like, to the office to tattle.  What’s up with that?
If suspicion, nervousness, unease and bitterness is the goal…well, you’ve succeeded!  Surely that isn’t necessary.
But what do I know?
We are a bunch of curmudgeons, getting older by the day, and sometimes find change hard to swallow.  But with time I believe we will all agree that most of the rules (not all) make sense and/or are out of management’s hands…vis a vie the trash situation and the Edinburg water restrictions.
All in all Sandpiper’s is a lovely place to live.
That I do know.

The Book Thief – Marcus Zusak (Sue Z informed us that a movie is being made about this book.

Note from Karon: The following is the synopsis from the movie.
The Book Thief is a film based on the popular young-adult novel written by Markus Zusak. It is being adapted into a movie. The plot is set in Nazi Germany, and stars Sophie Nélisse, Geoffrey Rush and Emily Watson.
This film is narrated by Death, and it takes place in Nazi Germany. The main character, Leisel Meminger, is given to foster care at the age of nine. In foster care, she steals her first book. This begins her infatuation with novels and reading. The family she lives with hides a Jewish boy during their time of war, and it carries you through the journey of Leisel and her book obsession. Readers and book lovers can identify with Leisel and her plight, but the film also paints an extraordinary picture of youth in Nazi Germany and what life was like to those who had to struggle through the war and times of hardness. It’s a touching film that is created by the same studio as The Life of Pi, and it is guaranteed to be a breathtaking and adventurous film.)
The Inferno – Dan Brown
The Summer Guest – Justin Cronin
Beloved – Toni Morrison
State of Wonder – Ann Patchett
Life After Life – Kate Atkinson
White Hot – Sandra Brown
The Return of the Prodigal Son – Henri Nouwe
The 12 – Sequel to the Passage (November’s Book Club read)
Hell’s Gate – Colonel Fraser

American Diabetes Association's annual Walk to Stop Diabetes

Sad news from Patsy.
My daughter-in-law, Jena Thompson died of complications of diabetes in October.  KSAT TV did a story about this since it is National Diabetes month.  You can watch the interview with my son on their website, www.KSAT.com

He and many friends are participating in the Walk for Jena on Sat.

This Saturday, thousands of people will lace up their tennis shoes to participate in the American Diabetes Association's annual Walk to Stop Diabetes.
The "Step Out" walk raises hundreds of thousands of dollars for research to find a cure for the deadly disease.
Among the estimated 3,000 walkers will be Chad Thompson, who'll be walking in honor of his wife who died from diabetes-related complications in early October.
Thompson married the love of his life, Jena Evans Thompson, on March 3, 2012. She was a firecracker, full of personality and seemingly full of life, he said.
None of her friends or family imagined they would be attending her funeral just 19 months later.
"She would not let people know how bad it was and so I know it was a shock when she passed," Thompson said. "Her 40th birthday was a month before she died and people saw there that she was struggling and that was the first time anybody really saw that and it was the last time anybody really saw her."
Diagnosed with juvenile diabetes at the age of 11, Jena managed her disease for years and didn't let it stop her from achieving her dreams.
She had a successful career in public relations, working for the Dallas Cowboys and the San Antonio Spurs before starting her own firm.
As her disease progressed, she was unable to work.
"The last couple of years, her health just started declining and I didn't ever know much about diabetes. Frankly, I was sort of naive," Thompson said. "In the last year, especially six to eight months (before her death), she was basically bed-ridden."
Shortly after her 40th birthday party, Jena's body began shutting down.
"Her kidneys started reaching Stage 3 of disease and then in the last few weeks there, she just declined to the point where she was in the ICU for two weeks and just couldn't hold on anymore," Thompson said.
Jena Thompson passed away on Oct. 7, one month and one day after her birthday.
Sadly, Jena's story is not that uncommon.
"Diabetes is a huge problem in San Antonio and Bexar County," said Dr. Curtis Triplitt, a researcher at the Texas Diabetes Institute Research Center.  "About one in seven people in Bexar County have diabetes currently."
Triplitt said while there is no cure, the disease can be managed.
"Everything from getting Type 2 diabetes, or adult onset, to managing Type 1 diabetes, we can prevent all the complications of diabetes from good glucose control, good blood pressure control, good cholesterol control," Triplitt said. "This will help decrease the risk of complications tremendously."
According to Triplitt, fundraisers like this weekend's walk help fund the fight to stop the disease and raise awareness in the community.
"Every time someone comes and walks, a lot of that money comes right back to someone who has diabetes or helps fund a project that will actually help find a cure for diabetes," Triplitt said.
Even though Jena lost her battle with the disease, Chad has vowed to pick up the fight in her name.
"It's made me realize the diabolical nature of the disease," Thompson said. "I had no idea she would pass this young, but obviously I know now it can kill you at an early age and it can debilitate you possibly even younger than that."
Chad has found some relief from his grief by raising money for this weekend's walk.
In a short time he's raised nearly $2,000. He will be joined by many of Jena's friends as they walk in her honor.
The Step Out Walk To Stop Diabetes kicks off Saturday, November 2, at the AT&T Center.  Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. and the walk starts at 9:00 a.m.
